As first General Counsel of North America's largest privately-held homebuilder with operations across Canada and the United States, responsible for broad spectrum of the North American legal function as it relates to the core of Mattamy's real estate business as well as the supporting functions in Finance, Marketing, IT, Human Resources, Procurement and Risk. -Minimized reputational and litigation risk by implementing clear systems, policies and controls for key legislative compliance requirements -Significantly reduced legal fees by instituting Legal Fee Management Program and completing legal work internally. -Lead counsel on Mattamy's biggest M&A transaction in its 40 year history ($570M acquisition of Monarch Homes in Canada) -Lead counsel on the largest residential purchase transaction in North America in 2014 (10,000 acre purchase of land for $100M) -Undertook internal investigations to cost-effectively control internal and external complaints and employment-related issues.

Tim Hortons is Canada's largest quick service restaurant chain. In this role, I was:- Responsible for negotiating key legal agreements and developing and overseeing legal strategy, policy and execution in all legal areas critical to the accomplishment of Tim Hortons Canadian Strategic Plan for real estate, development, human resources and franchising as well as company strategy in all major litigation (including one of the most important franchise class cases in Canadian class action history). - Responsible for overseeing all ongoing activities related to the development, implementation and maintenance of Tim Hortons privacy policies and procedures.- Responsible for insurance and building and maintaining an integrated risk management infrastructure. - Ensured regulatory compliance and acted as chief liaison with government investigators including Canadian Food Inspection Agency, U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission and the Advertising Standards Council. - Worked closely with each departmental business leader to implement best in class policies, processes and systems to identify risk and opportunity, monitor and validate risk measurement and valuation methodologies; and mitigate risks where necessary. - Oversight for Ethics and Compliance Department. Reporting responsibility to Board of Directors and Audit Committee.Previous roles at Tim Hortons encompassed:- Legal advice to IT Department, Marketing, Purchasing, Government Relations and Corporate Communications. Encompassed provision of critical advice relating to the protection of the Tim Hortons brand including legal management of annual Roll Up the Rim to Win contest and protection of trademarks and other intellectual property- Management of internal and external investigations- Establishment of Franchise Disclosure process- Negotiation of major non-traditional licensing arrangements.
