About Stephen Macneil, Phd
Overview: I build technology to help people work together to address the world's hardest problems. Many of these systems feature visualizations and explicit scaffolding to support reflection and improve insights. Research: My current research focus is related to the fields of machine learning, visualization, and big data analytics as applied in the field of education. Given the nature of education, my research requires the use of human-centered design, statistical analysis, and a strong knowledge of experimental design. Industry: Data Scientist specializing in Text-mining and Natural Language Processing. I extensively use visualizations (D3, GGPlot, and Tableau) to tell data stories that lead to actionable insight. I strongly believe that humans should be involved in the ML pipeline. To that end, I have full-stack Javascript experience (MongoDB, Express, Redux, and React but I am also well-versed with Angular) and know a good deal about interaction design and user experience. I also have extensive experience in developing social computing tools that involve communities in this process. Teaching/Mentoring: I have a lot of experience teaching in higher ed (8 classes), k-12 outreach events (e.g: Julia Robinson Festival and NC Science and Tech. Expo), informally (functional programming student group), and in continuing education (Trilogy Web Dev Bootcamp). In addition, I've supervised over 30 undergraduate students through my research projects (e.g.: Nature-Net.org and D4SD.org).
