In addition to duties for Head of Parks, Countryside and Events, I took on responsibility for: management of sports facilities - 4 leisure centres with pools, 5 community leisure centres, Athletics Centre; lead officer for London 2012, Tourism and Town Twinning; member of Town Centres Regeneration Board and Local Development Framework Board. Developed and delivered strategy for existing and new facilities / properties. Key member of Walpole Park, Pitzhanger Manor and Gunnersbury Park heritage restoration projects. Member of Environment and Leisure Departmental Management Team. Set and managed annual budget of £8m net revenue, including £3.3m income, and up to £5m capital. Delivered annual efficiency savings of up to 10%. Responsibilities included: 140 staff and c.300 contracted staff; producing revised parks and sports strategies and a 2012 and Tourism Strategy; advocate in planning issues including major developments and s106; delivering improved asset management for service properties; key input to £300m joint procurement for waste, recycling and grounds maintenance contract; increasing community engagement through consultation, funding, volunteering and governance.

Responsible to Director of Cultural Services for strategic direction of Service managing over 140 parks and open spaces, 70 buildings and 50,000 trees in the borough, advising Corporate Board and Members on professional issues and overseeing strategy development, business and service planning, strategic procurement, high resident satisfaction and delivery within strict budgets. Lead Events programme delivered to 150,000 attendees from across west London. Staffing consists of 50 direct employees and over 150 main contract staff. Member of Cultural Services Senior Management Team and often undertaking cross-cutting working at Divisional level with corporate responsibilities. Develop and direct major projects across multiple service areas. Set and oversee annual budget of c. £6.3m net revenue and up to £4m capital.Responsibilities included: Implementing management change programme to reorganise resources; setting policy on all open space issues; re-tendering contracts in four areas totalling over £25m in aggregate; building partnerships at strategic and operational levels; devising and delivering against corporate performance framework; delivering ambitious capital programme.

Responsible to Head of Park Operations for managing open spaces and built facilities in Area, overseeing business unit planning, compliance with relevant legislation, high customer satisfaction and Service Plan delivery within strict budgets and income targets. Sites include 2 Country Parks totalling over 500ha, Ranger Service, 2 historic gardens, 2 campsites, new Lee Valley Athletics Centre, sports and leisure facilities and Park HQ. Line manage 6 staff, consultants and contractors. Member of Leisure & Environment Management Team, Quality Management Team and Performance Management team. Manage budget of c. £1,500,000.Responsibilities included: Undertaking business and management planning for all sites; develop strong marketing function to maximise visitors and income; work to research, develop and implement service improvements in all areas; develop and manage partnership working to maximise benefits to the Authority; CMP and fundraising for Myddelton House and Gardens.

Responsible to Regional Director for managing 20 reserves - totalling over 3,000 ha, across 7 counties - for birds, wildlife, visitors, profile and income generation; leading and developing the Reserves team of 50 staff, line managing 2 Senior Site Managers, 3 Site Managers and a Health & Safety Officer. Member of Regional Management Team, overseeing all Society work in the South West Region. Plan and manage budget of £1,500,000 annually. Chair of Regional Reserves Management Team. Key sites include: West Sedgemoor / King Sedgemoor, Somerset; Arne and Purbeck Heaths, Dorset; Exe Estuary and Pebblebed Heaths, Devon; Marazion and Hayle, C’wall.Responsibilities included: contributing to land-related policy decisions; overseeing regional delivery of national policies on reserves; delivering SSSI favourable condition and species / habitat BAP targets; agricultural issues; staff recruitment, management and development; management planning; producing reports for national committees; supervision of £350K Dorset Heathland Project, 2 HLF land acquisition / capital projects (£600K), and 4 EU LIFE Projects; land tenure issues and reserve acquisition; visitor management / engagement, interpretation and promotion.

Responsible to Chief Executive for managing a portfolio of 46 reserves for biodiversity, heritage, visitors, Trust profile and income generation; led the Reserves team of seven staff; Member of Co-ordinating Team, and producing quarterly reports for Trustee’s Conservation Committee; Plan and manage budget of £400,000 annually; Key sites included: Rye Meads (joint with RSPB), Hoddesdon; Therfield Heath, North Herts; Kings Meads, Hertford; Project Director for Trust’s consultancy, LandMAS, on survey, advisory and habitat creation / management projectsResponsibilities included: leading Trust’s reserve team to achieve corporate strategy; reserve management planning and work programming; supervision of £846K HLF Project, £105K EU LIFE Project; county BAP delivery on reserves; staff recruitment; team resource management; contract management; land tenure issues and reserve acquisition; forming, leading and working within partnerships at local and county level; income generation; monitoring programme; site publicity, promotion and interpretation; Health and Safety; recruiting and managing volunteers.

For Hertforshire County Council, responsible for a range of projects in land management and community enablement; acted as project manager, advisor, community liaison, or partnership leader as appropriate. Projects included: farm and woodland conservation advice; liaison and advisor for Parish / District Councils; management plans for Wildlife Sites and community greenspaces; management of Local Authority reserves and commons; representation of Service on local and county forums; lead officer on BAP planning / monitoring and woodlands for the Service; production of walk leaflets; creating funding packages; managing volunteers - groups and individuals.

Responsible to Senior Ranger for a range of site management and promotion activities.Duties included: practical habitat management of parkland, woodlands and uplands; supervision of volunteers; biological monitoring; management planning; co-ordination of Local Records Centre; environmental education; guided walks; running events and Visitor Centre.Trainee Warden (Careership) The National Trust £6,500

Responsible to Head Warden for a variety of property management duties; 'Careership' is a modern apprenticeship in countryside management, given a National Training Award in 1995.Duties included: practical management for habitats, species and estate maintenance of 300ha estate, including 100ha Country Park; management of volunteers and employment schemes; task planning and costing; property management planning; environmental education and guided walks.
