I was seconded to Pretoria from what was then The Natal Mercury. I was privileged to be a journalist in the capital from the moment Nelson Mandela was inaugurated and for the first eight months of his administration in great detail, looking at the emergence of the new bureaucracy, the restructuring of the police and the armed forces into institutions serving all communities, and the growth of Mandela's own stature globally as South Africa's first democratic president.
