The downtown office of BBA Accounting Group Inc (my previous job) merged into MNP's downtown office during 2023. Despite the merge, my role remained focused on servicing a wide range of both corporate and individual clients. For corporate clients, this mostly includes year-end compilation engagements, review engagement, along with the filing of corporate tax returns. For individual clients, I continue to be heavily involved with our cross boarder clients who owe tax in multiple jurisdictions and help clients navigate the complexities how the tax systems interact.

After graduating from Sauder, I started working full time at BBA Accounting Group while also pursuing my CPA with part time school after work. Here I was given the opportunity to develop a large variety of skills when working with all types of clients. There were two main areas I developed skills in: year end work for corporate clients, and tax compliance work for individuals. Regarding corporate clients, I worked on a large breadth of corporate clients ranging from compilation work for small owner operated businesses to review engagements for medium size local charities. Here I honed my accounting knowledge and problem-solving skills for a variety of industries and contexts. I also leaned the ins and outs of many common corporate tax issues through the preparation of year end tax returns. Regarding tax compliance for individuals, given my experience as a summer student preparing US tax returns, I was a key member of the cross-boarder tax team during April personal tax season. Though this I was able to develop my technical knowledge of both tax systems and how they interact with each-other. I also gained exposure to teaching and mentorship as I was tasked with teaching other staff members the basics of US taxes when the need arose.

I have spent a total of 4 summers working for BBA Accounting as a Staff Accountant. My role there revolved around US taxes and saw me completing US tax returns for clients from beginning to end then passing them along for review. In the summer of 2021, I completed more than 100 returns all of varying complexity and length with many taking more than a day to complete. During my time there, I got to put much of what I have learned in University to the test such as working in large excel files and working with financial statements for clients with their own companies. I also was given the opportunity to develop new skills such as the ins and outs of the US tax system and people skills when it comes to effectively communicating with clients when asking for more information.

As of the summer of 2018, I was also hired as a Instructor/ Guard 2 (IG2). The majority of my job remained the same but I now I had the ability to supervise the facility when my boss was not present. The added responsibilities included training new staff, fixing chemical imbalances in the pool, managing other employees on shift, and being the first point of contact for any major incidents at the pool such as medical emergencies and police incidents.

There are two main aspects to my job: lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons. With respects to lifeguarding, some of my regular tasks include pool tests, hosing change rooms, guarding on deck, talking with patrons, first-aids, and much more. The second aspect of my job is teaching swimming lessons. I mainly deal with preschool age children but I have taught my fair share of school aged kids as well. This part of the job entails writing lessons plans, adapting skills to each kid, making report cards, talking with parents, teaching private lessons, and more. Both parts of my job combine together to make one cohesive whole and from it I have become a responsible leader in my workplace.
