About Steven Guo

Healthcare professional interested in improving the health of our communities and healthcare systems through an intersectional framework that engages the community, payer systems, provider networks, and policymakers. Leveraging my background in decision science and behavioral economics, I bring skills in research, program coordination, data analysis, management, and visualization to initiatives focused on social determinants of health, health equity, patient safety, maternal health, health innovation, and workforce development.I am also passionate about leveraging social innovation and entrepreneurship as a systems entrepreneur to drive social impact and health improvement. I feel strongly about designing sustainable systems with a human-centered and systems thinking approach in conjunction with leveraging and applying principles from behavioral economics and social science to build an environment for better decision-making and equitable outcomes.Additional areas of interest for me are: creating the infrastructure to facilitate more access to entrepreneurship for female and underrepresented students/founders; building innovation ecosystems that are just and equitable; exploring solutions at the intersection of the climate crisis, community health, and the downstream impact to the healthcare system/industry.

  • Gateway Health
    Thrive18 Implementation Consultant
    Gateway Health Aug 2018 - Aug 2019
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
Gateway Health Plan is a Medicaid Managed Care Organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My work focused on supporting the implementation of a population health project addressing social determinants of health issues on the Northside communities of Pittsburgh. Through a multi-sector partnership between a local health system (Highmark Inc., Allegheny Health Network, Gateway Health), health department (Allegheny County Health Department, Department of Human Services), foundation (Buhl Foundation), and community-based organizations (Project Destiny Inc., One Northside) the program was designed to leverage these connections to provide wrap-around services and close care gaps for residents in the community. This initiative, Thrive18, utilized a hub-and-spoke model that would connect residents to services that could address their social needs and reconnect them with appropriate health care services as needed. Through a team of outreach workers, composed of residents from the neighborhoods Thrive18 was implemented in, they were able to identify and address the urgent basic needs of at-risk residents, and facilitate an improvement in overall community health while concurrently reducing costly healthcare utilization (emergency department utilization, readmissions, etc.).

The pitch I developed focused on addressing the issue of provider-patient mistrust and proposing various ways the Pittsburgh community could tackle it locally.

The Fine Awards in partnership with the Fine Foundation and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation awarded healthcare organizations with a track record of excellence in safety and teamwork across various quality improvement projects. The program this year was the 10th anniversary of the Fine Awards, where fellows were paired with previous Fine Award winners to analyze whether their success remained consistent after receiving the award. These organizations were measured by whether they sustained their program success, spread it internally and externally throughout the organization, and developed a strong culture for quality improvement. Teams then made the case for why their Fine Award site succeeded on those metrics and should receive a $15,000 award.
