Being a hospital ship, some of the key components included the utilization of high performance HEPA filters… Show more Throughout this one month internship, I was tasked alongside a group of five other engineering students to design a humanitarian relief ship. A list of requirements were provided with the most important being that the ship needed to support 50,000 people over the course of 30 days. I, specifically, was tasked with selecting key characteristics of the HVAC and navigation systems. Being a hospital ship, some of the key components included the utilization of high performance HEPA filters and standalone air ionizers in each hospital room in order to neutralize harmful particles and bacteria. Additionally, hospital rooms would be maintained with a negative air pressure differential to best contain and isolate harmful bacteria. In terms of navigation, the selected design utilizes hybrid components, partially manual/autonomous. In other words, the ship will be controlled manually when desired, or if autonomy is selected, the ship will be navigated via a system of 3D infrared sensors. In general this internship exposed me to various concepts that I was unfamiliar with prior.
