As a Chartered Professional Engineer and Manager, my career has been built on over 30 years’ of experience designing innovative electrical and electronic hardware for use in power, mining, marine, rail, and research applications. In conjunction with the completion of a 7 year engineering traineeship with A. Goninan & Co Pty Ltd, I graduated from The University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Honours) in 1995. Soon after graduation, I joined Bramco Electronics in pursuit of opportunities in the electronics and embedded software fields. For the next several years our team developed a range of innovative protection and control electronics products for mining and industrial applications. Following my passion for research, in 2000 I joined the University of Newcastle as a research engineer and a few years later commenced a PhD whilst continuing to work full time. My PhD was focused on the condition monitoring and diagnostics of electrical power equipment and was completed in 2011. To date, I have authored / co-authored 37 international research publications and presented my work at conferences and seminars around the world. My academic career includes several years as a lecturer for the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Newcastle, teaching large cohorts of undergraduate students in both Australia and Singapore. My teaching focussed on embedded hardware and software design, RF and analog electronics. I have also generated funding for a diverse range of research projects, primarily aimed at providing novel solutions to industrial problems. From the perspective of leadership, I have been responsible for teams in both industrial and academic settings. My current role is the Engineering Manager at Ampcontrol CSM where I am the site engineering authority. In this role I provide technical leadership to the organisation and managerial leadership of the Engineering and Product Management Departments. My leadership position enables me to direct research efforts into new areas. Recent activities include innovative hybrid power system technology for marine vessels. I also maintain a Conjoint Senior Lecturer position at the University of Newcastle where I have successfully co-supervised post-graduate students for their PhD and Masters of Engineering awards.

Research AcademicUniversity Of Newcastle Dec 2013 - Dec 2014In 2013 I successfully promoted an innovative project idea to obtain significant research funding from a collaborative organisation known as CRCMining. My proposal was to develop wireless charge electric mining machines for use in underground mining environments. This project promotion gained significant CRCMining project funding from the international mining equipment manufacturers Caterpillar, Sandvik and Joy, and the mining houses Anglo American and Barrick Gold. The project premise was that in 2012 the International Agency for Research on Cancer reclassified whole diesel exhaust as a class 1 carcinogen. This change in classification has significant implications within the mining sector and has resulted in increased mining legislative pressure to minimise “as far as reasonably practicable” diesel particulates from the underground environment. I developed a technical implementation strategy that leverages an emerging technology which can facilitate the wireless charging of battery vehicles (no emissions of carcinogenic pollutants). Not only does the project focus on the safety of the mining personnel and their health with regards to diesel particulates, its aims benefit the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and it is of public interest as it fosters the application of alternative transportation technology that is not dependent upon fossil fuels. It has required significant engagement with financial stakeholders, government safety authorities (Australia and USA), the university sector and the general public with extensive and ongoing private meetings, conference and seminar presentations of my work. The more public forums include the CRCMining Research and Innovation Forum (2014), Institute of Engineers Australia presentation (Newcastle Branch - 2015), NSW Trade and Investment 25th Electrical Engineering Safety seminar (2015) and the NSW Trade and Investment 26th Mechanical Engineering Safety seminar (2016). -
Lecturer In Electrical EngineeringUniversity Of Newcastle Jul 2009 - Dec 2013In 2009 I was appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Newcastle. I lectured Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering subjects at campuses in both Australia and Singapore. I continued in this role, and that of Program Convenor for Computer Engineering, until 2013. I taught a diverse range of subjects including:• Advanced computer systems• Embedded computer architecture• Embedded software and firmware• Analog, digital and radio frequency electronics• High speed printed circuit board design My teaching consistently ranked well above the University and School average with Student Feedback on Teaching (SFT) scores. My lecturing experience is based on cohorts with over 100 students and I have also been awarded a “Highly Commended” in the Faculty Teaching innovation awards. Where applicable, my teaching methods include a strong practical project focus which has been shown to improve theoretical retention, student initiative, and enhance their real world problem solving ability. I also have had several years’ experience teaching offshore cohorts in Singapore. The teaching delivery was based around an intensive 2 week theoretical delivery in person, followed by project and tutorial activities which I supervised remotely in conjunction with local tutors over a block of several weeks. I would then return to assess the student projects and prepare them for their final examination. My academic research was focused on the condition monitoring and diagnostics of equipment found in the power, mining and heavy industry areas which has resulted in 30 international publications. -
Research EngineerUniversity Of Newcastle 2000 - 2009In 2000 I was appointed as a senior research assistant at the University of Newcastle. The research was based on the condition monitoring of high voltage transformer bushings. It was during this period that I commenced my PhD part-time. From 2005 I was appointed as a professional officer at the university, providing electronic design and teaching support to the Electrical Engineering Department. During this period I commenced teaching advanced electronics at the Singapore Campus on a fly in fly out basis. -
Design EngineerBramco Electronics 1995 - 2000In 1995 I was appointed as an electronic design engineer for Bramco Electronics, a company that manufactured equipment for mining and industrial applications. During this time my work primarily focused on the design of innovative control and protection relays which were widely adopted in underground mining settings both in Australia and internationally. -
Industrial TraineeshipA. Goninan & Co Pty Ltd 1988 - 1995In conjunction with my Electrical Engineering degree, I commenced a 7 year Industrial Traineeship with A.Goninan & Co Pty Ltd in 1988. The Traineeship provided a broad range of electrical engineering experience including train/locomotive design, manufacture and commissioning. It also involved significant heavy industry plant maintenance. This structured engineering training ground has proved to be an invaluable foundation from which to build a career as a professional engineer.
