I first met Steve in 2003 when I was living and working in Beijing China and had chosen to volunteer as a commissioner at the Cascade Scout Reservation. Steve’s enthusiasm for his work coupled with his helpfulness made him liked by all. He made everyone, volunteers and staff alike feel they played a key role in the success of the summer camp experience. Because of his charisma and leadership I gained a respect for Steve and we have since become good friends. One of Steve’s best leadership traits is to introduce ideas to volunteers in a fashion that encourages them to take personal ownership. He then provides the guidance and support needed for them to be successful and receive due credit for their efforts. This ability was exemplified by his skill in creating teams of trainers and learners and set performance goals so that they were able to design cohesive educational programs which were successful for all. During his management of the Scout Reservation Steven repeatedly participated in the successful application for and acquisition of grant funds from several organizations in support of the camp programs. He oversaw the construction of a new 2.5 million dollar modern camp facility and became responsible for the day to day operation and maintenance of the 800 acre reservation including two main lodges, staff housing, water system, and other support buildings. The extent to which Steve was connected to other organizations in the region also became clear to me. Each one of these areas represents contact with people and volunteers. Some of these areas include: 1. The Scouting movement. 2. Washington State Fish and Wildlife Department Hunter Safety Instructor. 3. NRA Certified Instructor/Range Safety Officer 4. Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician 5. American Heart Association First Aid/Basic Life Support Instructor 6. Snohomish County Search and Rescue. 7.
