Group Leader for the Nanoengineering and Metrology Group within the Materials Engineering Division.

Leading and supporting research efforts focused on producing nanostructured synthetic materials with biologically inspired transport properties for dialysis applications, developing sensitive and multiplexed gas sensors which combine nanoscale material properties with electrochemical analysis and machine learning, establishing new capabilities and performing characterizations to analyze material aging and compatibility concerns, and developing new materials with tunable emissivity.

Deputy Group Leader for the Bionanomaterials Group within the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

Researched nanofluidic phenomena in nanotubes, primarily carbon nanotubes, which are relevant for sensing and energy storage applications.

Researched the transport of small versus bulky ions and the translocation of single molecules through narrow carbon nanotube channels that approach molecular dimensions. Additional efforts were aimed at the development and fabrication of the nanofluidic devices which are used.

Carried out Ph.D. research on biological and synthetic nanopores. Projects included modifying track etched polymer pores with DNA and calmodulin to create tunable gated pores; investigating and modeling DNA transport through a-hemolysin pores; fabricating and testing ionic diodes; and working to characterize the wetting and dewetting properties of different nanopores.

Duties included leading weekly discussion sections, problem solving sessions and laboratory style classes as well as holding office hours and writing/grading homework and exams for several different class in the Physics Department.

Contributed to and led research focused on combining sample preparation, target amplification and electrochemical detection of pathogens all integrated on a portable microfluidic chip. Successfully detected pathogens included H1N1 and E. coli present in human saliva samples at clinically relevant concentrations.
