Automation Systems Application Engineer
Applications engineer for the Bruce Horizontal Diffusion Furnace (BDF) product line utilized for semiconductor wafer production. General duties include:-Releasing BOMs and updating electrical and mechanical drawings and models using CREO, AutoCAD Electrical, Windchill, Axapta, and Epicor. -Complying with ISO 9000 standards. -Migrating old documentation to new ERP systems. -Replacing obsolete components with new or improved concepts while maintaining SEMI standards and preventing impact to customer processes. -Creating sales quote BOMs and labor estimates for customer aftermarket upgrade packages. -Supporting the assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of systems prior to factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT). -Traveling to foreign and domestic customer sites and working in various clean room environments. -Providing customer support for maintenance and troubleshooting of automation systems. Special Project:I was the R&D project lead for the heat tamer auto door prototype, managing the project from concept through test phases. I designed, planned, and/or specified for all electrical, mechanical, and programming aspects of the design such as material selection, motion mechanics, sheet metal design, 3D models, wiring schematics, PLC truth tables, ladder logic, HAZOP analysis, subsystem integration, and testing. I also maintained Gantt charts for project goals and timelines. The main purpose of this design was to reduce the overall heat loss (power consumption) in the process tubes and prevent excess heat build up in the mini-environment during wafer load/unload, which would overheat the wafer handling robot and overwhelm the air circulation system if more than two tubes (out of six) where open at once. This prototype was initially designed and tested in-house prior to receiving a beta design revision and being tested in a customer’s facility.
Electromechanical Engineer
Engineering the mechanical and electrical design of vacuum and pressure furnaces for material processing. Such as: de-bind, sinter, HIP, hot press, CVD/CVI, MIM, autoclave.Hired full time at AVS in 2010 after graduating college. At first, continued to focus on mechanical design, creating mechanical schematics and bill of materials for cutting, machining, welding, and assembly. Performed finite element analysis using SolidWorks and Compress. Moved to electrical engineering in the fall of 2010, creating electrical schematics and bill of materials for plumbing and instrument diagrams, heater and motor controls, power distribution, instrumentation wiring, PLC analog and discrete I/O, Profinet and Ethernet communications, IO-Link communications, control cabinet layouts, wire harnesses, and conduit layouts using Draftsight, AutoCAD, and Solidworks. Designed for Allen Bradley, Siemens, General Electric, Automation Direct, and Honeywell PLCs. Performed calculations such as heater power and element resistance, static forces, hydraulics, water and gas flow, and total system power. Utilized basic knowledge of ASME, NEC, NFPA70, NFPA79, UL508, IEC, and OSHA codes and standards. Continuously branched out and supported every department within AVS. Assisted with mechanical assembly, electrical wiring, PC software and HMI installations, start up, testing, and troubleshooting of systems. Wrote operator maintenance manuals and SOPs for design standards and internal company policies. Created new part numbering systems and assisted in the development of a new MRP system for sales, engineering, purchasing, accounts receiving, inventory, and shipping. Interviewed and trained new employees, and managed groups of interns and temporary employees. Reviewed schematics, bill of materials, and system assembly for quality control. Traveled to multiple foreign and domestic customer sites for system analysis, troubleshooting, and aftermarket sales quoting.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
In 2008 started a two year internship at Advanced Vacuum Systems (AVS) Inc. Worked primarily as the lead mechanical engineer on various vacuum and pressure furnace designs for industries such as: tungsten carbide, zinc reclaim, high polished silicon carbide mirrors, spinel armor, die casting, ceramics, aerospace, quartz melting, and government defense contracts. Hired for proficiency in SolidWorks, due to inherited projects from another company. Trained multiple mechanical engineers in the use of SolidWorks, to convert the company from 2002 AutoCAD to modern 3D technology; effectively reducing rework in manufacturing by upwards of 20%. Continued to support the company remotely while finishing a five year electromechanical engineering degree at Wentworth.
Engineering Intern
Began engineering career in 2007 as an intern designing, machining, and assembling components for Evergreen Solar’s automation line. Became adept in 3D modeling using SolidWorks, and learned standard machining practices through hands on experience. Assisted engineering management in the layout of a new facility in Devens, MA.
