About Steven Halber

From the beginning, it’s all about the numbers. In elementary school, I kept being told I should become an actuary since was good with numbers. Those being pre-spreadsheet days, I filled numerous pages with the various sports standings and statistics scenarios. In college, I ended up with a math and statistics major. Then, wanting to do something that was more application and less theory, I went for my MBA, a way to help translate my numeric skills into something more tangible.Once I began doing more work with accounting groups, it seemed a reasonable time to go back and get the CPA since that would serve as a natural aid to why requests were framed the way they were and so that I could speak more fluently to the auditors from a subject matter expert perspective. Having the CPA had been on my personal to-do-in-the-future list: it was something that had always felt “fun” given my historical love of spreadsheets, numbers, and rule-based analysis in general; as a certification, it would be something that is easily portable and a qualification that always seems to be in demand.Naturally, given my propensity to occasionally do things in an order that is logical for me but perhaps outside the box for others, I decided to take all four sections of the exam in the same calendar quarter to avoid the temptation to procrastinate and lose momentum. Everyone who heard my plan assumed I would go four-for-four. No pressure, then. First one was tough, but I passed. Pro tip: take the practice exam online, don’t just work questions in the study guide. The other three went much better, I think I ended up surprising myself more than everyone else with the results. In my multiple career roles spanning nearly 25 years, I’ve been involved with credit card, business loans, and personal loans; used multiple business analysis tools to create reporting and analysis for multiple levels and units within the organization; and mentored more junior co-workers. Having experience in all these various backgrounds means that my skills are easily transferable to anywhere in the accounting or finance environment, or anywhere where analytical and numeric acumen is an integral part of daily life, even in a non-financial role.I can bring my wide experience to a path similar to the one I’ve been on, or I can bring my numeric expertise and insightful viewpoints to a new-to-me endeavor. Looking forward to hearing from you and discussing how I can help.
