Part of Baker and Taylor – James Bennett is the largest book supplier based in Australia. I worked here part time whilst I studied Library and Information services. I sought this as an opportunity to learn more about this side of the business and was allowed to freely approach all departments within the company in an attempt to gain more experience and understanding of how each area worked. Within the 6 months I was there, I had pretty much gotten to know everyone in the factory and office floors.

I joined TR in late 2008 as a Technical Editor. I merged into the House Editing team a few years later and was promoted up to Senior Content Specialist II by the end of my tenure. My duties included:• Managing the publishing end-to-end process of an extensive list including market leading subscription titles in print and online outputs. This included: Copyediting author copy; input of data via XML into our custom CMS; checking multiple proofs; liaising with authors and production teams; working with offshore clients; keeping page extents correct and within budget. I saw an opportunity to improve our training standards at work and volunteered to update out inhouse documents as well as deliver the training to all new starters. This led to me becoming a “super user” at work and a common first point of contact for people with technical issues. The training covered XML and CMS editing/publishing, end to end publishing. I was also regularly involved with student work placement recruitment drive, welcoming students and teaching them skills in XML and the BAU running of the department.Common usages of software included:• Using a variety of CMS systems and software including: Athena, Adept (SMART), Photoshop, SAP, Oxygen Editor, MS Office, Word Styles, FTP programs, Excel, Word, UltraEdit, Internet and Outlook.

• Created, logged and updated all content on web-based service, Casetrack.• Sourced case information relevant to Casetrack.• Followed all open cases– completing and closing off all records.• Sent all relevant information to external clients using zip files; update spreadsheets.• Worked on a daily basis using locals CMS, MS Office, and the Internet.• I collaborated to create a new role in 2007 (Publishing Co-ordinator) and sought out larger responsibilities in order to progress within the company.• 6 months in the social committee raising over £1,000 for charity amongst staff.
