Fishery Observer/ At-Sea Monitor
Working closely with NOAA and NMFS, the Northeast Observer Program collects information on commercial fishing vessels to monitor catch and bycatch, understand status and trends of fish stocks and protected species, understand interactions with protected species, determine the benefits derived from fishing activities, and predict impacts of existing and proposed management actions.Responsibilities: Conduct pre-safety checklist; communicate with captain and crew about responsibilities and data collection needs. Collect gear, tow-by-tow, and economic information for each trip. Record all kept and discarded species in each observed haul. Collect biological samples (lengths, otoliths, scales, vertebrae) from priority species. Record interaction and incidental takes of protected species (mammals, sea turtles, sea birds).
