Steven Lowe work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Programme Manager, Agricultural Landscapes
In this position at FFI, I helped manage a programme of work in partnership with three international NGOs and a corporate partner. The projects were conducted in many countries on several continents, including Brazil, Indonesia and Myanmar. The common theme was to develop and implement solutions to maintain or restore biodiversity in agricultural landscapes whilst maintaining sustainable livelihoods for local communities. We worked closely with local partners to achieve project goals and build capacity to address future challenges.
Father/Research Scientist
Job activities: Look after two babies and a house. Write and edit several manuscripts for publication. Identify thousands of aquatic invertebrates at my home lab. Write reports on biomonitoring including ID guides and support tools.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Job description: to develop biomonitoring protocols for Zambian rivers and to build capacity through production of accessible tools and support material, training of assistants and organising training workshops with a range of stakeholders. As the invertebrate specialist of the multi-organisational team, I have collected, identified and analysed what is almost certainly the largest collection of aquatic invertebrates from Zambia (which contains the source of both the Zambezi and Congo rivers)including many previously unidentified species and probably genera. I also contributed significantly to gathering a large and varied data set of environmental parameters in the field and from GIS-derived data for sites throughout the country. Responsibilities of the position also included production of field guides and keys to Zambian aquatic invertebrates, museum collections, reports to stakeholders and publications in scientific journals which are in preparation. In addition to improving my GIS, data analysis and field technical skills, I have gained invaluable experience concerning the role of science, policy, and stakeholder engagement in the development and establishment of monitoring protocols. I have also gained unique insight into the physical characteristeristics and biotic assemblages of the rivers of a much understudied region within the context of the central/southern Africa's changing physical and social landscape.
Post Doctoral Research Associate
During this period I conducted several research projects investigating the impacts of invasive species on river ecosystems in South Africa. Study sites were located throughout the Fynbos Biome in the beautiful Cape Fold Mountains. The invasive taxa of study were several species of introduced fish and riparian trees and the native taxa were aquatic macroinvertebrates, endemic fish and algae. During this period, attention to the scale and severity of the threat of invasive species on river systems and water security at SAIAB and nationally was growing rapidly. In addition to my research projects I was priviledged to be involved in the planning, implementation and monitoring of two groundbreaking rehabilitation projects to restore river systems of high conservation priority that had been invaded by several non-native fish species and trees (funded GEF and WWF respectively). This involved helping to organise and conduct many meetings with a range of stakeholders, engagement with the media and contribution to policy-making on invasive species at regional and national level.
