About Steven Mickelsen

Dedicated to finding new and better treatment options for patients that have challenging cardiovascular problems. My efforts have focused on developing medical devices and technologies that impact treatment of heart rhythm and other important health problems. My inclination is to work on projects where new therapeutic technologies are evolving from the preclinical into the clinical phase while maintaining a presence on the front line of clinical cardiology.

Associate professor internal medicine and director of Laboratory of Integrated Cardioneuroelectrophysiology. I am a practicing clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the University Hospital (moved to part time appointment in 2020). Prior to 2020 most of my efforts focused on complex ablation procedures (atrial fibrillation VT, PVCs, Flutter SVT etc.). My involvement in technology development projects in the EP space has given me an opportunity to refine my procedural skills in ways that have helped me to succeed in the most challenging clinical cases. In 2011 began working on novel neuromodulation technologies and techniques to treat heart failure. I developed a device to treat vasovagal syncope and became involved in a number of collaborative projects for vagal nerve stimulation. More recently I have become very involved in sympathetic modulation as a potential target of her failure. Since 2010 I have focus most of my R&D efforts on pulsed field ablation technology development and understanding optimization of therapy waveforms.

  • Farapulse, Inc.
    Founder
    Farapulse, Inc. Jan 2012 - Feb 2016
    Menlo Park, Ca, Us
I invented a pulsed electric field system designed to more effectively treat atrial fibrillation. I founded the company officially in 2012 when I licensed my own patent from the University of Iowa. Very quickly the company grew and the early preclinical work attracted substantial investment, including early investment from Boston Scientific. I was acting president and CEO until I was able to attract a more experienced industry executive (Allan Zingeler) to join the company and take the helm. I stepped down to become the Chief Science Officer of the company for a short period and left the organization after the company relocated from Iowa City to its current location in Menlo Park California.
  • The University Of Iowa
    Cardiac Electrophysiologist
The University Of Iowa Jul 2010 - 2014
Clinical training and research. My focus was on cardiac autonomics and cardiac electrophysiology. I developed a number of medical devices and worked as an independent investigator. The principal R&D efforts focused on high voltage ultra-short DC impulse ablation techniques (irreversible electroporation).

I worked under Elliot McVeigh PhD at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NIH) in the laboratory of Cardiac Energetics (David Balaban was the director) . I worked closely with Hiroshi Ashikaga MD studying the impact of myocardial infarction on electromechanical activation in the ventricle using MRI and epicardial multi-electrode array. I also lead an independent project to evaluate transvenous access to the pericardial space and feasibility of implanting epicardial pacing leads by this approach.
