Research into the response of E.coli to oxidative and chemical stresses; specifically interested in defining the role of combinatorial treatment in the interplay of non-additive stress response and cross-protection. Distinct conjugated tagged free thiols and amines from centrifuge extracted E. coli when grown under various timed exposures to oxidative stress were determined by UV-Vis HPLC. Analysis of HPLC chromatograms and UV-Vis maximum wavelength data revealed concentration changes in the extracts, both upward and downward, of small free amines and free thiols, with a particular interest in amino acids, when grown under various time increments of oxidative stress. Studied DH5-*/pBluescript E. coli colonies ability to grow, transcribe and translate functional proteins (by indication of a fully functional lac operon) under different chemical stresses and combinations of these stresses (oxidative, pH, presence of a metal ion (Cu (II)), and presence of a chelating agent (EDTA)) as determined by blue/white screening assay utilizing Kodak Molecular Imaging software. Looked at colony growth in numbers, colony areas, and protein expression of the protein *-galactosidase transcribed and translated analyzed using Kodak Molecular Imaging software. This gave an idea of how the stresses and combinations were affecting the growth of E. coli, while looking at the combinations gave insight into how the E. coli were responding to these stresses. It was determined that multiple stresses, including HCl + H2O2, EDTA + HCl, and H2O2 + CuSO4, showed cross-protection and a non-additive stress response using R software linear modeling. Distribution data was also analyzed using the R software, with skew and kurtosis histograms confirming the conclusion of cross-protection of stresses in E. coli.

Lectured and facilitated laboratory experiments in a High Performance Liquid Chromatography Instrumental Analysis course. Was responsible for demonstrating proper use of the HPLC, explaining the laboratory procedures and how the machine worked, developing the gradient method, and determining the correct expected results.
