Steve Misner has been involved with the Drill Stem Test (DST) testing industry since 1974 when he worked summers interpreting DST and production tests for his stepfather’s engineering firm. His stepfather was involved with DST testing from 1943 to 1968 with Johnston Testers. During the course of his career Steve worked on the initial development of Closed Chamber testing (1977) and with Baker developing Electronic Digital Recorders (1979). In 1978 he became the Supervisor of Baker’s Data Quality Control (DQC), Calgary office, and oversaw the initiation of software, database construction including Horner Analysis, and DST analysis to construct a Canadian DST database. In 1982 he acquired the Canadian DST database which consisted of 36,000 tests and the related software. In 1986 he acquired the rights to the Petroleum Research Corp. DST microfilm file of 60,000+ original DST reports, in the United States. Steve has been responsible for the computerization and analysis of the Canadian Institute of Formation Evaluation DST database (CIFE), 340,000+ DST’s covering federal and provincial lands of Canada and the American Institute of Formation Evaluation (AIFE) DST database (170,000+ DST’s), at one time reaching staff levels of 40+ individuals. From 1982 onward he has been directly responsible for the collection of over 110,000 DST’s in the United States. During this data collection effort he visited each of the Government State offices and ensured AIFE had all of the tests which each individual office had in their files. He additionally accessed the proprietary files of Amoco and Arco (which included all of the companies they had each acquired over the years) and arranged for all of their historical records to be copied. To augment the government and private files accessed Steve also collected DST’s from over 30 individual testing companies. He was the Chairman of the PPDM Well Test Committee and provided the initial design for data elements which would encompass all types of pressure tests, including Drill Stem Tests and production tests.AIFE, under Steve’s guidance has worked with University and Private Research facilities on a wide range of spectrums, from Earthquakes induced by Hydraulic Fracturing to Regional Pore Pressure Modules in addition to assisting firms in individual resource plays.Throughout his career, which now spans over 45 years, he has had a lifelong commitment to the collection and analysis of DST data.
