Statement of Teaching Philosophy Mr. Steven P. Rice As an instructor, I highly value an active and engaged classroom. Though this is the case, I revere structure and order, and I command respect, attentiveness, and cooperation. I format my classes in a way that not only keeps students engaged but also keeps them questioning more about the course material. I do my best to teach my students not only the course material, but also how it goes beyond the classroom. I educate with these questions in mind all of time: (1) What does the text say? (2) What does it mean? And (3) How can it be applied to my life?During my emerging years as an instructor, I do my best to accomplish these many things through different avenues. For one, I structure my classes that as soon as students enter, they have a task at hand to do. Once a majority of them enter, I begin classes by getting students to settle and focus on that day’s lesson and aim. As a kinesthetic and visual learner, I value and stress “hands-on” and illustration learning. I feel this is the best approach as it places the onus on the students and making them become active learners. I allow little to no “down” time, as I constantly stimulate my students’ minds. I do assign a lot of work; I demand much and excellence from them; and I hold my students to a high standard. I meticulously set up lessons that will constantly draw this from my students. Still, I coerce my students to read the course material and to take charge of their education, which allows them to become insiders and question what is presented to them.I do my best to set up cooperative-style learning in the classroom, and extended and creative research beyond the classroom. Within the classroom, I stress the idea of “less teaching, more learning.” Periodically, I format group work that...

Adjunct ProfessorBoricua College Sep 2013 - Sep 2019I teach English Composition, mostly the second course. I challenge students with material much tougher than they expected. Of course, I introduce work that allows them to know that I care, will be challenging and pushing them to their best intelligence (and not just potential), and get them to become more critical/analytical readers, writers, and thinkers. Though they see the label, I infuse social sciences and philosophy and English literature as part of my curriculum. -
Teacher'S AssistantLiu (Brooklyn Campus) Jan 2010 - Sep 2019I tutored students in various courses of the Humanities. I worked hard at getting students to become better and more critical readers, writers, and thinkers. I forced them to take ownership of their work and produce the material possible. I challenged them and had students see their work and what they produced from the various points of view: one, to make them more critical thinkers, etc. and two, to allow them to be more flexible.

Full-Time High School TeacherBishop Loughlin M.H.S. 2008 - 2012I prepared students for college as best I could. I taught a wide variety of literature, vocabulary, grammar, etc. I assigned some of the most creative projects that interconnected their skills to their sciences, history, mathematics, and art classes. Beyond English, I taught Global Studies and Geography and U.S. History and Government. I had some of the best results, even despite being labeled an "English teacher." I proved to be one of the toughest, most loving, challenging, progressive, and flexible/adaptable teachers in the building.
