About Steven Townsend, Cfa
I joined FHLB Topeka in June of 2017 as the Portfolio Manager. I was promoted to Director of Investments and Balance Sheet Strategy in September 2021. In my current role, I oversee our long-term and short-term investment portfolios. At the same time, I lead the development and execution of strategies related to overall balance sheet size and composition and manage the overall capital position of the FHLBank. As of December 31, 2023, we were about $75bn in total assets with $45bn in advances to members, $20bn in investments, and $8.4bn in mortgage loans.I enjoy taking questions, concepts, or processes and seeing others' eyes light up when a solution I've developed gives them more than what they asked for. Even more important than getting it right, it's when that answer provides a solid framework for future decision-making that will save everyone time and effort. I've grown as a professional throughout my career, thanks to diverse experiences. I have experience in fixed income capital markets, securitized products trading and structuring, portfolio management, debt issuance, interest rate derivatives, interest rate risk, credit risk, and operational risk. Experience in a sales role taught me a lot about how to develop and work with clients for the long-term. I spent time in a traditional corporate finance role and lead work streams for new system implementations. I have experience with on-premise and cloud application development. I work to continually grow and develop technical skills to better leverage new tools in data analytics.Outside work, I dabble in iOS development with one app published on the App Store. There are other ideas I'm always working on, and I'm still looking for suggestions from others. I have a BS in Business Administration from Kansas State University, dual majoring in Finance and Accounting, and earned my CFA Charter in August 2021.
