My primary role was to lead Costain’s team and the client’s design team and project stakeholders to develop the detailed design for all structures elements ensuring an efficient, safe and buildable design is achieved. I was responsible for addressing design issues, reviewing designs for buildability, opportunity and risk. I built the construction programme and preparing construction method documents to demonstrate how we will construct the structures once out on site to demonstrate how our target cost price is achieved. To ensure the pricing was as accurate as possible I undertook buildability reviews and use my knowledge of previous schemes to specify the temporary works requirements. I engaged with the wider supply chain to develop permanent and temporary works solutions before providing accurate pricing schedules for inclusion in our target cost budget. Show less

I was introduced to the ECI team to identify buildability issues with the preliminary design and to develop solutions to enable a robust… Show more Heysham to M6 Link Road (£123M) - ECI PhaseI was responsible for the early liaison with all the key stakeholders and project partners to consider the effects on them that a project of this type would have and successfully worked with the client to progress the project through the Development Consent Order (DCO) application and target cost negotiations. I was introduced to the ECI team to identify buildability issues with the preliminary design and to develop solutions to enable a robust target cost to be agreed with a workable design. I was also involved with developing the temporary works solutions on many aspects of the scheme required to construct the structures which included crane & piling platforms, haul roads, cofferdams, shuttering, sheet piling retaining walls and detailed bridge sequencing for construction. I developed working methodologies to construct all the structures across the scheme in order to build up a target cost for each of them. I negotiated the issue of the flood defence consent by the Environment Agency for construction of a 210m long 4 span bridge over the River Lune. This included such diversity as flood relief, flood analysis in relation to the in river platform design, wildlife and invasive plant species along with working methods to minimise the risks of working adjacent to and over the major watercourse which spans 85m between piers on each bank. During the planning for a reinforced concrete bridge crossing the West Coast Railway Line I developed a relationship with Networks Rail in order to agree working methodologies to minimise the rail possessions required throughout the construction. I liaised with Network Rail and surveying teams to develop a remote track monitoring scheme to monitor the railway assets throughout the construction phase of the project. Show less

Taxiways were resurfaced up to a width of 15m up to the first stop bar, drainage repairs and delethalisation to existing pits in the verges. All works were undertaken during nightshift runway closures where the runway is required to be fully operational each morning.My role as night shift site agent on this job involved a lot of liaison with the airfield operations team and subcontractors to ensure that the works completed each night were in line with the airfield safety manual. I ensured any operational problems throughout the night were dealt with efficiently and handovers took place in the timescales set by the contract. I liaised with subcontractors to organise their work areas on a nightly basis so that airfield operations could continue to take place without hindrance in a controlled and organised manner. The main challenges were building a new treatment plant offline in a confined working area and then maintaining flows in to the works whilst switching from the existing to the new facility and undertaking the many commissioning activities. Construction also included a FBDA ASP Control Building housing Air Blowers, control panels and laboratory, new site access roads including lighting and drainage, provision of new power supply, decommissioning of existing trickling filters, final tanks, wash water pumping station and sludge storage tank including landscaping of existing filters and final tank area using surplus excavated material.I reported to the on site Project Manager and was responsible for the management of the engineering team and subcontract management on site. Manchester Airport 5 Year Framework (£50M)The framework agreement was to carry out all civil engineering works on airports owned by the Manchester Airport Group Plc over a 5 year period and involved taxiway maintenance works and 70,000m2 of emergency taxiway overlays to ensure the ongoing operation of the airfield.

Design Secondment at Jacobs BabtieDesigning reinforced concrete storm tanks and assisting the detailer produce drawings. I aided the claims team in finding evidence to back up a claim against the contractor for costs incurred due to design changes/faults.

Trinity Terminal III Extension (£28M)The contract involved the design and construction of a 270m long extension to the existing deep water berth, together with approximately 15.1 hectares of paved container yard and associated services, berth access dredging, reclamation for the works and future onshore developments and the construction of environmental mitigation bunds.

Lostock & Rivington WTW’s (£23M)The contract comprised the design and construction of a direct filtration plant, including chemical handling, chlorine contact tank and wash water treatment plant, new 35 MI capacity treated water reservoir and associated pumping stations at Lostock and new wash water clarifiers and a new pumping station at Rivington. Large diameter connections to the existing pipelines and reservoir and links to other works control systems are included.

Rochdale Canal M62 Crossing (£2M)Construction of approximately 600m of new canal including modification of existing lock, construction of a new lock with associated over-bridge, concrete channels, wash-walls, sewer diversions and new access roads. The new canal will be diverted through an existing sub-way that will restore the navigation that was severed by the construction of the M62 trans-Pennine motorway in the 1970’s.

M62 Junction 8 (£20M)The widening of the M62 Motorway from dual 3 to dual 4 lane carriageways between a new grade separated junction 8 to be constructed just to the west of Burtonwood Motorway Services Area, and the existing Junction 9 at Winwick. In addition the construction of a new link road to the Gemini Retail Park, referred to as the Gemini Link Road.

Huddersfield Narrow Canal – Sellers & Bates (£4.2M)The project objective was to remove canal blockages in Huddersfield town centre involving a 90m tunnel under an existing mill (Top down Contractor designed construction), 420m of cut & cover tunnel through a factory, also some 100m of deep open channel and construction of 2 new canal locks. All areas of work were subject to re-design in Value Engineering.
