Controller
As the controller and accountant for a small construction company I was responsible for the entire financial and accounting side of the business, as well as large aspects of operations, HR, and IT. I implemented systems that I designed from scratch, as well as consulted to the CEO in regards to accounting, information systems, taxes, and legal matters. On regular occasions I saved the company money by correcting operations inefficiencies, as well as leading the effort to prevent credit chargebacks as large as $10,000. Using Quickbooks Online and other applications I was able to adapt previous procedures to make more efficient payroll, A/R, A/P, information, inventory, and reporting systems.
Classroom Support
Essentially a problem solver. With many problems that come to the IT department, I'm sent first to take a crack at it, especially if the problem is related to classrooms, study rooms, or offices. This is to reduce the workload on the trained IT staff. Also I take care of various menial and delivery/installation tasks. I received no formal training for this job. The majority of solutions I use, I created.
Student
Intern
My typical day would start by having an accounts receivable report on the desk of the CFO by 9 every morning. After that there were a number of various accounting tasks I was given from tax forms, reconciliation, general ledger entries and analysis of journals. After a week or so I was trusted to fill out multiple tax forms and write out the corresponding check without any supervision. I gained experience with New Zealand's Kiwi Saver program and Money Works accounting software.Since I was the only native English speaking intern I was given additional tasks involving customers and the training manuals. My desk was in the show room and while my primary duty was accounting department tasks, if a sales person wasn't available I would welcome customers and offer refreshments until they were available. My largest individual project was a full update of the training manuals. There were dozens of archived emails with notes on what should be edited in and out of the manuals. Most of them had very technical jargon that I had to adapt to and decipher. Once a day I would have a 10 minute meeting with the CEO where I had the opportunity to ask questions about the emails and what to put in the manual. As a side project I helped install Linux OSs in assisted living devices.
