    My research focussed on the efficient modelling of high precision large stroke compliant positioning mechanisms. Such mechanisms can contain complex-shaped flexible components. To efficiently include such components in the mechanism model, I investigated and developed a non-linear superelement approach. This approach is shown to be capable of accurately modelling arbitrary-shaped flexible components that are undergoing small or large deflections. Also, for faster numerical simulations of complete mechanisms, I developed an effective non-linear system model reduction method which can be applied to spatial flexible multibody systems.Furthermore, part of my research focussed on the development of improved flexible hinges for use in large stroke compliant mechanisms.For a link to my thesis see: http://doc.utwente.nl/87915/

    I developed a thermal deformation state estimator for online estimation of thermal deformations of a substrate in optical lithography machines (i.e. an EUV wafer-scanner). Online estimation is realized by combining model reduction techniques with Kalman filtering methods. Using only limited measurements of the substrate deformation for error correction, I showed that the method (in theory and in practice) was robust for a deviating thermal expansion coefficient of the substrate and unknown applied heat loads.
