CETI functions deternined by the NSW Minister for Health:1 To provide leadership, and work closely with area healthservice and other public health organisations and clinicaltraining providers, to ensure the development and deliveryof clinical education and training across the NSW publichealth system which:a Supports safe, high quality, multi-disciplinary teambased, patient centred careb meets service delivery needs and operationalrequirementsc enhances workforce skills, fl exibility and productivity.2 To design, commission, conduct, coordinate, supportand evaluate a clinical education and training programfor all new graduate clinical and clinical support staffin the public health system, which supports their rolesin providing safe, high quality, multi-disciplinary teambased,patient-centred care.3 To design, commission, conduct, coordinate, support andevaluate such other postgraduate clinical education andtraining programs as the Director - General may direct fromtime to time.4 To design, commission, conduct, coordinate and supportprofessional development programs to enable cliniciansto become skilled teachers, clinical leaders, trainers andsupervisors.5 To develop and oversee performance evaluation programsfor post graduate clinical education and training in theNSW public health system.6 To set standards for prevocational medical training andaccredit institutions for prevocational education andsupervision.7 To institute, coordinate and evaluate clinical trainingnetworks, including postgraduate medical trainingnetworks, and ensure they support service delivery needs,meet operational requirements and are, as far as possible,consistent with, clinical service network;8 In undertaking its functions, to consult and liaise withpatients and their carers, clinical and clinical support staff,the Department of Health other public health organisationsand providers of clinical education and training.

The Sydney West Area Health Service was established in January 2005, in line with NSW Health directions. This involved the amalgamation of Western Sydney Area Health Service, Wentworth Area Health Service and Lithgow / Portland Health Services (previously with Mid Western Area Health Service). Sydney West now covers an area of 8,904 square kilometres and spans the Local Government Areas of Lithgow in the west, Blue Mountains, Penrith, Hawkesbury, Blacktown, Baulkham Hills, Holroyd, Parramatta and Auburn in the east. The M4 Motorway and Great Western Highway provide key infrastructure support across the Area to facilitate resident access to health services. The Sydney West Area Health Service is a diverse geographical region, with its mix of primarily urban and also rural areas.
