I serve as a company officer / lead firefighter with the responsibility of directing the operation of one or more major pieces of firefighting apparatus with four to eight firefighters in all aspects of fire fighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials incidents, and emergency medical operations. The company officer / lead firefighter responds to fires and instructs crews to firefighting positions and placement of apparatus. I conduct a needs assessment of the fire incident and determine the mode of fire attack, initial and subsequent handline placement, rescue considerations, ventilation technique, and salvage/overhaul needs under the direction of the incident commander. The company officer / lead firefighter may serve as Incident Commander and assume responsibilities for the entire firefighting operation until command can be transferred to the next highest senior fire officer.As an Emergency Medical Technician, I respond to medical emergencies and provide or direct performance of patient care at the basic life support level. I evaluate patients for life threatening injuries from traumatic mechanism of force, environmental exposures, behavioral incidents, diabetic emergencies, respiratory difficulties, coronary conditions, neurological problems, and other medical emergencies. I make transportation decisions, helicopter or ground, based on patient condition and location of specialty centers such as burn centers and trauma centers. As the Chairman of the departments NFPA 1500 Health and Safety Committee, I ensure continuity of all committee functions. The health and safety committee reviews departmental policies and procedures for compliance with NFPA and OSHA regulations. We develop policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines regarding safety issues. Served as a Senior Airman (E-4) for the Goodfellow AFB Fire Department. Duties assigned at the time of honorable discharged included serving as a driver operator or lead firefighter for an engine company. Which included assuming command of emergency scenes and directing personnel until the arrival of the assistant chief of operations. I also was assigned as lead firefighter/EMT on the departments rescue truck, which is where I spent a majority of my time. Duties included assuming command of all medical emergencies until the arrival of off base ambulance personnel. As the rescue company officer, I served as interior command of structural emergencies until otherwise assigned by the assistant chief of operations. As a junior NCO, I was responsible for ensuring the completion of upgrade/annual training for the airmen assigned below me. I also served as an instructor of personnel in Combat Self Aid Buddy Care, American Red Cross Emergency Response (First Responder), CPR, AED, and assisted in EMT-B training. While station in Texas I was a member of the San Angelo Fire Department Ride-A-Long Program in which I served as a working member of the ladder company or rescue company. While in the program I received a great deal of invaluable experience in various types of emergencies. As a member I logged over 500 hours of ride out time from Jan 2001 to Feb 2002.
