FaceX was co-founded as a start-up business by Randy Kardon MD PhD, Pieter Poolman PhD and Steve Mitchell PhD to commercialize automated analysis of facial features and eye tracking for medical, laboratory and industrial applications for faces. The technology developed by the co-founders enables realtime, automated extraction and classification of facial features of expression, eye movements, and blinking dynamics, pupil responses to light that are affected by eye and neurologic disorders, as well as pain and fatigue. This has tremendous application for the military, veteran, and civilian populations.

Dr. Mitchell is the founder and operator of Componica, a consultancy group specializing in computer vision, machine learning, and other analytic tasks. He started the company after developing several successful deep-learning based products shortly after graduating from the University of Iowa in 2004. In late 2008, he hired two full-time graduate-level software engineers with expertise in computer vision to help expand the company. In 2009, Dr. Mitchell's group developed a successful language learning educational app for iOS using spaced repetition, which became a top 25 best-selling educational app for several weeks. In 2010, he co-founded Lightning Grader, a startup that developed a system for creating and optically grading student assessments in classrooms. Lightning Grader was acquired by Illuminate Education in 2015. In 2017, Dr. Mitchell co-founded FaceX, a startup that commercializes the automated analysis of facial features and eye tracking for medical, laboratory, and industrial applications for faces. Currently, his primary role is discovering new tasks and clients as well as developing new products and ventures for the company.

Dr. Steven Mitchell worked on a remote contract position developing algorithms for motion tracking of human subjects and making virtual reality footage more realistic and interactive. He was responsible for managing a team of 3 computer vision researchers, a computer vision intern, and a UI application developer.

As a Senior Computer Vision Engineer, he developed algorithms for visually aligning and tracking sheets of paper in real-time for desktop, Chromebooks, and other mobile devices, algorithms for reading and interpreting student-filled bubbles on assignments and tests, creating optical character recognition systems for reading handwritten student responses, and algorithms for facial recognition and estimating emotional affect for future products.In May of 2015 Illuminate Education acquired Learning Egg, LLC, a company he cofounded, for it's Lightning Grader technology. He continued as a consultant for Illuminate after the acquisition, and officially became part of the team in March 2017.

Research and development of model-based algorithms for automated segmentation of cardiac MR images, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and echocardiography. Development of graphical interfaces in WIN 32 and OpenGL for visualization and user interaction of MR and IVUS datasets.

Supplementary position involving expert development services such as custom WIN 32 / MFC applications, Netscape plugin software for onsite authentication, Cold Fusion custom tag design for complex SQL queries, custom spell-checking engines for English and Spanish, image thumbnail generation using anti-aliasing.
