About Steven Cherek
My name is Steven Cherek, the Village’s of Marathon City newly appointed Administrator - Treasurer. I would like to briefly introduce myself to all of you. I was born and raised in Mosinee, Wisconsin. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Geography (Community Development) from UW-Stevens Point and a post graduate certificate in geographic information systems (GIS) from Pennsylvania State University. I recently completed the Treasurer’s institute, a three-year course for municipal treasurers offered by UW-Green Bay. For the past 8 years I served Marathon County as the Deputy Treasurer-GIS specialist. Prior to Marathon County, I worked for The State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation as a Information Systems Data services professional (2010 – 2005) and a Stormwater Coordinator–GIS Specialist for Tippecanoe County in Lafayette, Indiana (2005-2010). When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my wife Amber and two boys, Jerry and Eddy. We enjoy watching our kids play youth baseball and spending time outdoors. We can be found at many local area events and activities. I am eager to join the Village team and contribute to the great work that is currently happening around Marathon City. It is my desire to help the community accomplish its goals, help residents enjoy their quality of life, work with the business community to ensure they can be successful, and carry out the policies and priorities established by the Village Board. One of the most enjoyable parts of working in local government is being able to make direct personal connections with members of the community. Deputy County Treasurer
Provide support for the County Treasurer. Performs professional accounting work including, coordinating the safekeeping of portfolio investments of the County, formulating and implementing County cash handling policy, preparing, maintaining, analyzing, verifying and reconciling complex financial transactions that maintain high accuracy of the County financial records and general ledger accounts. Manage daily deposits reaching millions in new revenue and reconciliation of County bank accounts. Coordinates, trains, and monitors customer service activity as it pertains to revenue collection procedures, software and cash handling procedures. Monitor data from the County point-of-sale system to subsidiary receivable systems and general ledger and performs related reconciliations. Maintains point of sale software system and property tax software system including but not limited to adding users, payment types and point of sale types. Provide assistance to taxpayers, other county department employees, and 61 municipal Treasurers regarding tax collection and settlement of delinquent taxes. Draft/obtain and review County real estate payment agreements with existing delinquent property owners. Review and prepare applications for tax deeds and takes property if taxes remain unpaid. Coordinate with the County Property Lister and 61 municipal land Assessors to created starting assessment rolls, load new assessment data, balance assessment data between software systems and submit final assessment and tax rolls data to the WI Department of Revenue (DOR). Performs all duties of the County Treasurer if the elected County Treasurer is unavailable for any reason. Programs such as Can/AM Technologies - Teller, Workday Financial software package, Cayenta Financial software, ArcGIS 10.2 software package, ArcInfo - coordinate geometry procedures (COGO), and Marathon County Land Records – Transcendent/Ascent database management system were used to perform job duties.

Maintained and updated Marathon County Land Information GIS system including preparing and updating the county's parcel layer, Road Right-of-way layer, Certified Survey Map layer and plats layer. Researched information relating to recorded documents, property dimensions, property locations, location and type of existing surveying monuments. Analyzed and evaluated researched data for unknown land owner parcels based on documents received and recorded in the Register of Deeds Office. Worked and communicated with other departments and public regarding property descriptions and tax information. Assisted the data management section in the maintenance and use of WISLR GIS Database for over 100,000 miles of local roads in the State of Wisconsin. Provided GIS support for WISLR’s Location Control Manager (LCM) application and the state’s annual mileage certification process. Stormwater Coordinator / Gis Specialist
Assisted in enforcing Tippecanoe County Stormwater ordinance and standards. Maintained department GIS system, including constructing features and attributes associated with the Surveyor’s drainage layer. Developed and maintained MS4 Phase II IDDE outfall inspections database. Conducted field inspections of outfalls within the Tippecanoe County MS4 Phase II Boundary. Created Metadata for all drainage layers files worked on directly and indirectly.
