About Steven Mathews, Ph.D.

In my role as Director of Teaching and Learning, I work with and support wonderful colleagues in the Teaching and Learning Center to develop innovative pedagogical strategies at Reading Area Community College (RACC). We educate faculty on current student-centered pedagogical approaches for all subject areas and modes of teaching. Further, we show how to create and maintain active and accessible course designs within Canvas (our LMS) to produce positive student learning outcomes. As a RACC instructor, I have taught College Success Strategies, a course that asks students to reflect on their academic, financial, and career goals and provides them with numerous tools and guidelines for lifelong success. I have also completed a PhD in music theory with a dissertation on Schenkerian analysis and Sonata Theory. The focus of the dissertation is on the prolongation spans within development sections of Type 2 sonatas, or "sonatas without recapitulation." As a graduate student instructor, I have taught all core music theory and aural skills classes to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Cincinnati.
