Lead Software Engineer
As one of three senior engineers, I have shared responsibility for an Azure based SaaS application called Decipher. This includes feature design, planning and implementation, architecture design and documentation, Azure DevOps management, security management, and support. Part of my role involves working directly with external clients to facilitate their IoT data ingestion into the Decipher platform. This often involves designing custom solutions as internal systems on the client side are largely varied.
Software Architect
I started at CVCheck working on the existing client facing web application using ASP.NET MVC, ASP.NET WebForms, jQuery, Typescript and SQL Server. During this time, we migrated the application from physical servers to Azure and I had the opportunity to design a new sync system for the CRM and marketing platforms (Drip and SendInBlue). The system I designed and implemented cached data in Cosmos DB via an Azure Service Bus feed from the web application to manage REST API rate limits in the third-party marketing platforms. Timer triggered Azure Functions called these REST APIs to keep client data in sync with the host web application. After I was promoted to Software Architect, we started breaking up the legacy web application into micro services using Azure Service Fabric. I worked on CI/CD design using Bamboo and Octopus Deploy. I was instrumental in migrating our accounting system from Saasu to MYOB Advanced including several customisations and customer/financial data sync from the web application using Azure Functions, Azure Service Bus, and Cosmos DB. I attended the ‘Hack yourself first’ course by Troy Hunt as my team focused on improving the security of our code. I improved the performance of several large SQL Server databases through query optimisation and indexing.
Senior Consultant Software Developer
I started my contract as a member of the Petroleum and Geothermal Register development team, responsible for delivering new features and enhancements to the existing client facing web application using ASP.NET MVC, SQL Server, and jQuery / Knockout. Following budget cuts that saw the team size significantly reduced, I was moved into a new role working on improving the architecture of several existing internal applications that required significant support. As well as this, I optimised the performance of existing T-SQL scripts and queries; one nightly script I worked on improved from a 45-minute execution time down to eight seconds.
Senior Consultant Software Developer
As part of a Middle Office rapid application development team, I had responsibility for the full software development lifecycle while creating global tactical solutions to address cross-business challenges.I worked with business users to gather requirements and then I designed, developed and tested applications using SQL Server 2008 R2 and ASP.NET 4.0 making extensive use of jQuery including jQuery AJAX to improve client responsiveness. These applications often incorporated SSIS components to import data from various data sources.Recently I converted ADO.NET data access layers to use the Entity Framework and I have been involved in the development of a new project template based on MVC 3 and the Razor view engine. I improved performance of existing SQL Server T-SQL stored procedures by examining query plans and re-factoring queries as well as improving indexing where appropriate. I also up-scaled several Access 2007 applications to SQL Server databases with ASP.NET front ends.
Software Architect
After a promotion, I introduced several software development improvements to the European team including source control and requirements / bug capture. During this time, I also recruited and mentored a software engineer, used my business analysis skills to document process flows for the Content Delivery Network product, and developed tools to improve order entry accuracy resulting in fewer billing disputes and improved cash flow. Reporting systems that I developed in SQL Server 2005 and ASP.NET enabled the billing team to invoice over USD 800,000 that would have otherwise been un-recoverable.I developed and maintained SQL Server triggers, stored procedures and SSIS packages as well as improving the performance of existing code by examining query plans and improving indexes. I upgraded existing SQL Server 2005 databases to SQL Server 2008. I used SQL Server Reporting Services to email reports to users on a schedule and I built SQL Server 2008 data warehouses mainly consisting of summarised data from North American-based Oracle systems to speed up management reporting in Europe.
It Manager
I moved from a contract role into a permanent role reporting to the Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for all of the company’s information management and technology. During this time, I upgraded all existing Access 97 databases to SQL Server 2000 and developed new SQL Server 2000 databases. As a part of this process, I developed and maintained SQL Server triggers, stored procedures and DTS packages as well as developing a new Visual Basic .NET solution for validating data stored in SQL Server databases against images from an OCR scanning package and a Visual Basic .NET solution for encrypting sensitive data in SQL Server databases. I also developed an Intranet using HTML and ASP to access SQL Server databases via ADO. When another manager went on maternity leave, I took over the management of two staff members and continued managing them until I left the company.
It Manager
Reporting to the Managing Director and sitting on the Management Team, I managed all aspects of Information Technology and supported approximately 80 staff members. I was also part of a steering committee that ensured the successful implementation of the company’s ERP system, Frontstep ERP. As a part of this implementation I used my business analysis skills to improve processes in areas of the company ranging from inventory control to order entry and product development.I was often able to use my data analysis skills to produce integral reports for other members of the Management Team, helping them to make decisions particularly concerning plant capacity and utilisation. Most of this analysis was performed using Access 97, Excel 97, VBA and ODBC but I also built a reporting database using SQL Server 2000 to summarise data from the Progress based ERP system for financial reporting. During this time, I also created a company Intranet using ASP to access Progress 4GL databases.
