Computer Science Teacher

Catalina Foothills High School

Catalina Foothills, Arizona

Half of my role is teaching the two sequential CTE courses in Computer Science. 'Software and Application Design' is a robust introduction to CS topics (guided by Arizona Dept. of Ed.); while 'AP Computer Science' focuses on core concepts in software design and development via the Java language (guided by The College Board). Each include end-of-year student exams by their respective agencies. The other half of my role involves proctoring 'Course Emporiums': a special type of class wherein students who have been unsuccessful with prior coursework can retake them in a manner similar to independent study. The proctor role includes monitoring student progress thereof, as well as assisting students with as-needed mentorship and guidance towards achieving successful completion thereof.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

University Of Arizona Department Of Computer Science

Tucson, Arizona Area

Teaching Assistant for the Junior Algorithms (CSC 345), Senior Algorithms (CSC 445), and Geometric Algorithms (CSC 437) courses. Service Record as follows:> Summer 2016: CSC 445> Fall 2016: CSC 445> Spring 2017: CSC 445> Fall 2019: CSC 445> Spring 2020: CSC 345 and CSC 437I worked closely with the instructor on course management, including: reviewing exam and assignment drafts, grading and coordinating with the TA team to grade in a timely manner, maintaining the official gradebook, posting grades and other broadcasts to students, handling student grading and assignment submission issues/appeals, etc.I worked closely with my students in a mentorship and coaching manner based upon the mentorship provided to me by Professor Emeritus John Earnest. This encompassed holding plentiful office hours to enhance fundamental understanding of course topics, build study and writing skills, manage test/coursework anxiety, and empower personal development.Just as important is being able to provide this mentorship and coaching to students of a variety of brain and personality types; and to explain topics in a variety of different ways. This is especially true for atypical minded Computer Science students such as those who are more cognitively 'left-brain' and artistic in nature than analytical and technical; and especially students dealing with ADHD, diminished self-confidence, and/or anxiety. Ergo, one of my specializations is working with such students one-on-one as a team to develop tools customized to their mind for the successful learning and doing Computer Science; while otherwise taking personal attention in all of my students and being a supportive, accessible, and empowering TA. To be frank: giving a damn about your students and caring about their growth and success inside and outside the classroom goes a long way and is as important if not more so than simply getting them through your course.

Graduate Assistant / Lab Manager

University Of Arizona Center For Digital Humanities

Tucson, Arizona Area

My role at the University of Arizona’s Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) was numerous: involving helping sett up and maintain the organization (especially its X-Lab R&D space), developing yearly iterations of the Virtual Harlem Project, assisting with the review, selection, and specification of pilot projects, consulting on the development and management of pilot projects, grant writing and the coordination of co-author contributions thereof, working with other immersive visual tech such as 3D Scanning, and team management. The attached document 'Eiselen - Working at the CDH' provides much more detail on the specifics of each role.

Aug 2017 - Jul 2019

Game Developer / 3D Modeler / Game Programmer

Virtual Harlem

Tucson, Arizona Area

Virtual Harlem is a project founded and led by Dr. Bryan Carter in University of Arizona Africana Studies. It is a 3D video game simulation of the famous New York City neighborhood during the 1920’s-30’s Harlem Renaissance at the height of the Jazz Age, is powered by and developed in the Unity 3D game engine, and has been experienced through a variety of Virtual Reality interfaces including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and the AZ-LIVE VR-CAVE. My role involved a variety of game development tasks, mostly 3D modelling (art), setting up 3D environments (level design), some game programming (dev), and other gamedev tasks. The PDF document 'Virtual Harlem Development History' has been uploaded to this entry, and it provides much more detail to the work performed on the development of each Virtual Harlem iteration.I helped produce 4 iterations of Virtual Harlem: versions 2014 and 2015 (while working at AZ-LIVE), and versions 2015 and 2017 (while working at the CDH), and invite readers to view the respective entries for these two work experiences for more info thereof.

Jul 2015 - Jul 2019

Adjunct Faculty Instructor

Tucson, Arizona Area

I was the Instructor of the Summer 2017 CSC 245 (Discrete Mathematics / Structures) course, for which I was assigned one TA (who performed excellently now works for one of the [good] AAA video game studios). I taught the course in an engaging and empowering manner similar to that of my TA career (see TA role for more info); while making use of memes in my lecture slides and fun/funny examples during lecture discussion. This resulted in reducing both the boredom consequent of passively listening to lecture and the anxiety of learning topics; thus increasing in-class engagement and the confidence of students to learn and succeed. As a rare bragging moment: I recall meeting with the assistant Department Head to discuss my progress teaching the course; and him mentioning that "I have never seen anyone teach CSC 245 so enthusiastically --- and 245 is a tough course to do that in!" He also discussed a great criticism of me lecturing a bit fast in terms of the pace of both speech and content, which was an issue further communicated to me by some of my foreign students of whom English is not their first language. Ergo this provided an excellent opportunity to refine my presentation skills such that the issue was resolved to my students' satisfaction shortly thereafter.

Visualization Specialist / Lab Assistant

Arizona Laboratory For Immersive Visualization Environments (Az-Live)

Tucson, Arizona Usa

The Arizona Laboratory for Immersive Visualization Environments, or AZ-LIVE, is managed by the University of Arizona's University Information Technology Services, or UITS; under the Research Computing division. AZ-LIVE's main role is providing Virtual Reality visualization services for the academic community through its CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) Virtual Reality system.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_automatic_virtual_environment)During my career at AZ-LIVE (technically my employer was UITS Research Computing, as AZ-LIVE only refers to the CAVE and the room it was in, though I use the two names interchangeably), I had two main roles, which I explain briefly below; and have added a PDF document detailing my career at AZ-LIVE and portfolio of client projects.>>> Role 1: Working with the AZ-LIVE CAVE. This role involved four main things:1) Maintaining the hardware and software of the AZ-LIVE CAVE system2) Setting up and hosting client visualizations in the CAVE3) 'Virtual Reality Classroom': Giving Virtual Reality lectures to students4) Setting up and hosting general group and public tours of AZ-LIVE>>> Role 2: Creating 3D and Virtual Reality visualizations. This role involved up to three things:1) Visualization Consulting i.e. first meeting with a client and/or helping them to create their own visualizations.2) Visualization Development i.e. creating a visualization for a client3) Visualization i.e. delivering images, videos, or VR/Non-VR executable applications of client visualizations (i.e. video game-like desktop applications, Oculus Rift applications, or CAVE applications viewable in AZ-LIVE)
