Working on the iOS app for NOW TV

Maintaining and developing iOS app for Travel Republic and dnata Travel. The app allows you to browse hotels and flights, through to completing your booking. Been heavily involved in a significant amount of refactoring of existing codebase from Objective-C to Swift, in addition to working closely with designers to improve the look and feel of the app, as well as the code.

Senior software engineer for a white label cross platform mobile application for checking train times, planning journeys, and buying tickets for any train anywhere in the UK. Tickets purchased can either be delivered to the phone as a barcode, or picked up at the station. This product is the official app for many train operating companies, including Virgin Trains, Great Western Railway, and Arriva Trains Wales.The mobile application takes payment card details, which required me to gain knowledge of an in-house library for RSA and AES encryption, as well as increasing my awareness of PCI-DSS requirements.

Worked on a ticket validation product for Android, iOS, and embedded Linux devices to decrypt, decode, and show ticket details and validity to inspectors.The embedded Linux environment uses a Java application to read from the USB barcode scanner, and display the result to the screen. To access the screen I developed a JNI layer in C which allowed the Java application to draw images and text to the display using DirectFB. Creating this required a good understanding of and familiarity with the GNU compiler and linker. The result of this design was a significantly more lightweight and performant solution than the simpler alternative approaches; such as X Windows with GTK+, QT, or Windows Embedded.

Developing J2ME application for completing surveys. Also worked on the server side that the client synchronises with to download new survey definitions, and to upload completed surveys.Seperately worked on creating from scratch an iPhone version.

In this role I developed software to run on M2M embedded devices in industrial situations, which would perform a set of tasks locally, as well as communicate with a web service to upload data, and receive updated configuration, etc.Also designed and implemented embedded Java software to communicate with a third party's controller located inside escalators and travelators. This app periodically communicated over a serial protocol to read data from the controller, and then uploaded them to a central server for analysis.

JSP scripting to develop a web app for generating reports on internal services. Worked with both Sybase, and Oracle. Also did some shell scripting, using the Korn shell.Gained experience with Solaris, and completed Solaris 10 Administrator Course.

Assisting the lecturer in a lab environment with first year students learning Java. Position involved being readily available to assist students with problems they encountered while learning Java. Typical problems included compilation errors, and helping the student understand what the error messages mean and how to rectify the problem. Also sometimes sitting down with the student to help them further understand programming concepts such as loops, functions, and classes.
