I trained as a scientist, with degrees in biochemistry and chemistry and was awarded my PhD in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. I have worked in industry, the charity sector, the NHS and most recently in higher education, managing research projects of a scientific or technical nature. In the past I have managed projects in chemistry, biotechnology, nutrition, cancer epidemiology, bionanotechnology, biomedical engineering and cancer biology.For the World Cancer Research Fund I managed a global project in Nutrition and Cancer, which is widely regarded as the most comprehensive study in the field.At the University of Oxford I managed a project in Bionanotechnology and at Imperial College I managed the Osteoarthritis Centre of Excellence in the Bioengineering Department.For the NHS I was Programme Operations Manager for the Cancer Programme of the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at the University College London Hospital (UCLH).I was seconded from the NHS to University College London (UCL) to act as interim Manager for the Cancer Institute.My current role is as Divisional Manager for the Division of Infection and Immunity in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UCL, A centre for teaching and research excellence in immunology, pathogen evolution and host-pathogen interaction. Prior to my current position, I was Institute Manager for the Eastman Dental Institute, which is the largest postgraduate dental school in Europe and has a reputation as one of the world’s leading academic centres for dentistry. The Institute has a global reputation in its three key areas of interest – Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Clinical Research, and Microbial Diseases.
