About Steven Herman

I am a veteran broadcast journalist with a background as a media executive, author and educator. I have been on the staff of the Voice of America, as part of its foreign service, since 2007, serving as a bureau chief and correspondent throughout Asia, reporting from dozens of countries, and now VOA's chief national correspondent following five years at the White House as senior correspondent and bureau chief. My latest book, “Behind the White House Curtain: A Senior Journalist’s Story of Covering the President — and Why It Matters,” was published by Kent State University Press in June of 2024.I am an adjunct assistant professor at Shenandoah University and previously an adjunct lecturer in journalism at the University of Richmond. I have also taught a Johns Hopkins Univ./OLLI media literacy course. During 2022-23, I was the JURIST journalist-in-residence at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and am now on JURIST's board of directors. In 2022 I was selected as a Kiplinger Fellow of Ohio University and was a First Cohort of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network. From 2016 until 2024, I served as the USAGM representative on the board of governors of the American Foreign Service Association. During my extensive media career I have also been a country director in Japan for Discovery Communications, leading a multi-national team there that launched Discovery Channel, which achieved one million subscribers in its initial year.I am FEMA-certified in emergency management and an emergency communications officer for Stafford County, Virginia. I also serve as vice chairman of the county's Telecommunications Commission.
