About Steven Irby

Ever since I can remember, technology has been the center of conversation at the dinner table. I grew up with first-hand exposure to Silicon Valley pioneers and became a software engineer who helps companies ship high-performance, high-quality software. I focus on the big picture, the end user and pushing past boundaries to provide new and better ways of getting a job done.Colleagues have described me as scrappy. I’m an entrepreneur and an engineer who seeks to create an impact on architecture, libraries, and how we test. My passion is to drive vision and mission, to inform and engage. I know what works and what doesn’t in terms of product/market fit. Some career highlights include:• Co-founded a biotech startup that was partnered with a large National Laboratory for advancing software for the biomanufacturing of all chemicals.• Became a winner at iGem and built a working prototype for a complex scientific SaaS product.• Created Slidermetrix, used to collect real-time feedback for the 2014 Super Bowl ad ratings report.• Was a core developer on Comcast’s Xfinity mobile, which millions of customers have used.• Launched Hen Outdoors, an online community and business for avid outdoorswomen, growing the community of users from zero to 50K people. While I’m proud of my work, I am constantly seeking the next challenge and collaboration. I know results come by showing up and putting in the work to make a product 1% better day after day. Having mentored many junior engineers over the years, my leadership style is extreme ownership and honesty. This is required to build a winning team and a profitable product.Want to chat? Sep 2023 - Present

Senior Software Engineer

Canvas Medical is a pioneer in the healthcare industry, offering a self-serve EMR and payment platform for developers. I serve as the lead front-end engineer responsible for building the core product, working in tandem with stakeholders. Our team developed an advanced appointment scheduling tool for providers across multiple locations and time zones. I also collaborated with the CTO to address performance issues with the legacy code, performed a code base overhaul and introduced best practices for front-end React, Cypress testing, styling, theming and front-end tests.Additional accomplishments include mentoring junior engineers and upgrading the patient communication system to track opted-out users. I extensively used Django to develop features, fix bugs and debug issues.

2021 - Sep 2023

Travel & Entrepreneurship

Based on a desire to seek out new challenges, technologies, and new cultures, I spent a couple of years traveling across seven continents. I also launched Random Daily Art, an online daily newsletter with a mailing list that grew to over 3000 daily subscribers. I hand-built an automated system while self-hosting a mail server to manage emails blasts and post on social media automatically. The full web app for artists was built using: Next.js, React, Node.js, Go Hugo and Mjml for responsive emails. In 2021, I worked with a team of four co-founders to launch a biotech startup called Upp Bio. We focused on building a search platform for the biomanufacturing of chemicals. I built the software and devised the technical strategy, working with the other co-founders on our pitch deck, business plan, and networking with VCs and possible customers. The working prototype (MVP) used Django, Python, React, Tailwind, and was deployed on AWS.Our team won the FedTech Cohort, a federal funded startup incubator program designed to commercialize technologies from large national laboratories such as NASA. We started raising some seed money but ultimately didn’t get off the ground.Upp Bio became a winner at iGem, an international genetically engineered machine competition, acknowledging our accomplishments by incorporating a complex scientific Python library to find metabolic pathways for the bio-manufacturing of chemicals. We also won several other pitch deck competitions. From customer discovery calls to pre-seed round funding with VCs, to collaboration with co-founders to find a product-market fit and develop a business plan—I’m very proud of what we accomplished and learned a lot about how to start a C-Corp.

Senior Software Engineer

The Creative Few

True to its name, we were a small agency of about 12 people at the Creative Few. My role involved working closely with our customers on a number of projects, including Intel and Comcast. The largest was an Angular 4+ app for Comcast which was used by millions of customers. I worked with other senior developers to help architect the entire application, using a mix of Angular 1 and Angular 4, TypeScript, gulp.js, web-pack, node.js, git, and many other tools. The scope of my work involved mentoring junior developers, debugging, writing JS/HMTL/CSS/Unit tests and ensuring code quality through peer reviews and tools. I worked on a wide variety of projects with various teams and customers. It was a fantastic experience learning how to deliver on schedule for customer projects with tight deadlines. Some highlights include:• Facilitated a smooth user experience while activating a new phone service with legacy telecom APIs.• Converted clients legacy sites to modern Angular apps offering better tools, security and accessibility.• Completely rewrote frontend code to accommodate new RESTful API designs.• Spearheaded the effort to add unit test coverage by writing the majority of unit tests and E2E tests.• Wrote clean, modular and easily testable code for a large enterprise Angular 1.3+ app.

Other Development Roles

Us

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in various contract and short-term roles focused on bleeding-edge development, helping companies grow market share with bleeding-edge products. Here are some highlights: At Eagle Cap Software, I developed a large Angular 4+ application for a US airline. This web app was used to manage the airline's aircraft fleet, routes, and crew members. I worked closely with stakeholders to gather requirements and improve efficiency of the code and the application through extensive use of RxJs and observables. I achieved 80% test coverage and improved unit test speed by 4x, migrating the test runner to Jest.js.At Vendscreen, I architected and built a responsive single-page web app using Angular 1. This involved coordinating with product designers and subcontractors using agile methodologies. I also wrote back-end node.js code, built out their authentication service, designed API endpoints for front-end, and coordinated with developers working on their backend API server. For Actions without Borders (Idealist.org), I collaborated with stakeholders and designers to create new features or to update existing functionality. Backend code for new and existing features was written using Python and sqlalchemy for the ORM. Front-end code was development using backbone.js, marionette.js and require.js. I experimented extensively with a server-side rendering library, wrote unit tests for both frontend and backend code, and performed code reviews on all pull requests. At Nike, I was a Senior Frontend Developer, creating updates to the company website using HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
