Research Associate - Centre For Advanced Spatial AnalysisUniversity College London Sep 2009 - Aug 2014London, United KingdomMy main responsibility is to research and architect crowd sourcing methods and applications for the JISC funded NeISS project. Designed, implemented and currently maintain complex GIS Web Application systems such as SurveyMapperConceived and built the successful Twitter research toolkit which collects real-time data from social networks for analysis. This toolkit is the brains behind Tweet-o-meter, a realtime meter of social conversation in worldwide cities, which was heavily published in major online blogs and print circulations. I was also interviewed and appeared on the Radio 5 show “Pods and Blogs”. This media coverage led to a 9 month installation of a physical, analogue version of the Tweet-o-meter website as part of the Growing Knowledge exhibition at the British Library. This toolkit is still used in ongoing research as well as continuing collaborations with other institutions and inclusion for future research bids. I have also sat on the JISC Geospatial working group since July 2010, advising the council on opportunities, challenges and priority areas emerging in the geospatial area.Throughout my role as Research Assistant I have presented numerous seminars within CASA as well as external conferences. Various lectures I have given throughout the UK include a session for the Demographics User Group at the Royal Society, a session for the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) conference which have led to successful partnerships with a publicly funded body and two sessions at WhereCampUK, an annual open source conference.Through my research into crowd sourcing I have consulted for major brands including Carling, providing my social media technical expertise for the Carling Cup Final 2010. I have also been part of a team providing mapping services of Twitter data with an international media agency in Sydney, 7, and advised CBS Advertising on data visualisation. -
Research AssociateUniversity Of Glasgow Oct 2008 - Apr 2009Department Of Computing ScienceWorking as part of the OpenInterface team in the Department of Computing Science (DCS) researching Multi-modal interaction techniques and design within the Glasgow Interactive Systems Group (GIST). OpenInterface is a multi-agent research project involving both corporate bodies and academic institutions. The aim is to “design and develop of an open source platform for the rapid development of multimodal interactive systems as a central tool for an iterative user-centered design process.” This includes the creation of the OpenInterface Development Environment (OIDE) as well as OpenInterface platform-compatible software components. These components encapsulate the functions of one or more input/output modalities and can easily be connected and swapped within a visual drag-and-drop interface to form HCI pipelines from within the OIDE. In my role I assisted in the design and running of scientific component evaluations as well as co-authoring descriptive and summative project deliverables. My role also included developing a significant amount of components, in both Java and C++, to augment functionality of the development environment and to prepare for final project demonstrations. As part of my remit within the project, I redesigned the User Interface of the project repository and added interactive components (in AJAX) to the website. The aim of this project is to bring together the Museum's library of high quality images, presenting the information to curators inside the museum and allow members of the public to buy these images. This scholarship was awarded for the completion of the final year Computing Science project which I was Team Leader, Lead Programmer. This involved taking the components written during the year, adding new requirements and then migrating the system onto a production server. Main areas of development and responsibility included the on-line payment gateway solution (C#), security and dynamic image manipulation. Studentship - Programming ConceptsThe University Of Glasgow Jun 2004 - Sep 2004Department Of Computer ScienceProgramming Concepts is an integrative curriculum supplement for public awareness of software engineering. Our goal is to improve public understanding of the fundamental intellectual activities that underpin Computer Science and Software Engineering, by demonstrating the widely used thinking skills that are at the heart of our discipline. We do this through a collection of linked activities none of which involve a computer. Instead, the different components are closely tied to other school subjects, such as English, Art and Science, and they are designed to support the curriculum for those other subjects. Our approach and rationale are explained in rather more detail in the background material below. Teachers using this material can do so in their own classroom, and will not require any specialist knowledge related to computers at all. Each activity has a small amount of additional background briefing, and they are designed to be usable with only a few minutes of preparation time.This project was funded by EPSRC (the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) as part of their Public Engagement activity and the materials were produced by staff and students from the Department of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow, with the assistance of many teachers and pupils from schools across Scotland.Supervisors: Dr Peter Dickman
