About Steven Floyd

Steven is the Chief Engineer of additive manufacturing (AM) technology development at Northrop Grumman Space Systems. Steven has 15 years of space systems engineering experience including support to the James Webb Space Telescope, and guiding development of precision mechanisms, propulsion subsystems, communications subsystems and composite structures products. Steven currently leads a multidisciplinary team developing, qualifying, and applying additive manufacturing technologies across a wide breadth of NG Space systems products. In more than 10 years of research and development with additive manufacturing, Steven has led advancements in polymers, composites, ceramics and metals technologies at both small and large-scale AM domains. Steven’s efforts led to Northrop Grumman’s first titanium metallic AM part to fly on a spacecraft. Steven was also a mechanical engineering lead in the creation of robotic thermoplastic composites additive manufacturing capabilities. Steven has led advancement of design and analysis tools for AM, exploration of in-situ monitoring techniques for additive quality control, development of novel elastomeric printing solutions, and qualification of multiple metallic alloys for fly-away applications. Furthermore, Steven has closely collaborated with many small businesses and universities to help advance their capabilities and the additive manufacturing industry to directly support needs for Aerospace applications and products.Steven also has extensive experience in performing structural dynamic analysis, classical structural analysis, research and development testing, dynamic loads analysis and finite element analysis. Specific areas of expertise include analyzing propulsion subsystems, mechanical ground support structures, integration layouts and flexible waveguides. Additional areas of analysis experience include analysis of gimbals, sensors, panels and other typical spacecraft structures. Further areas of experience include performing research and development testing of damping devices, mechanical property characterization, allowable testing and script generation for process improvement.Expert with Mathcad, Patran, Nastran, MATLAB scripting and Microsoft Office. Proficient with CATIA V5, NX, FEMAP, ANSYS, Pro-E and basic knowledge of Abaqus, AutoCAD, Solid Works and VA1.
