At this 2000+ member church. I coordinate, supervise, and delegate pastoral caregiving among three other ministers, 7 specialized lay pastoral care teams, and 5 support groups. My guiding goal has been to create a lay-leader driven program that is self-sustaining and hospitable to all types of people. Over the past year, I have focused on developing our volunteers’ and staff’s cultural competency toward people with mental illness, hosting suicide prevention trainings for the Care Team, the staff, and the general public. With input from our security task force, I created a walk-in policy that outlines safe procedures for our staff while being sensitive to the needs of all kinds of visitors.Administratively, I have learned, taught, and integrated our new cloud-based database into our pastoral care tracking system. I have taught our ministers and lay Care Team to use it, and I have also trained lay “experts” to help teach the other teams. I have written & edited manuals for each team, drafted a pastoral care guide for the church staff, and created curricula for membership classes & small group ministries. Other duties have included training new pastoral care volunteers & staff, and providing worship support & occasional preaching. I have even provided pastoral care for virtual members via email & phone.My favorite part of this job is making connections with and fostering growth among people in the church and the wider community, and seeing the fruits of those connections in the deeper kinship people experience with others and themselves. We build a better world one relationship at a time.

As a field experience while in seminary, I led the church through a transition period to prepare enter the search process for a Developmental Minister following their beloved minister’s death in 2013. I commuted two weekends a month to lead and preach Sunday services, teach classes, and provide pastoral counseling. During this time, I had the honor of officiating one of the first state-sanctioned same-sex marriages in Bartlesville.

Greater New Orleans Area

Spent summer here for a field education in Urban Ministry through my seminary. Worked with Executive Director and Volunteer/Program Coordinators in three main areas: (1) attending community meetings on the Center’s behalf, particularly a weekly coalition focused on racial and economic justice; (2) selecting and editing materials for volunteer curriculum to provide visitors understanding of the local post-Katrina context, focusing especially on systemic racism and its many layers; (3) helping to host volunteer groups as a facilitator and guide on their service learning trips. In this last capacity, I was blessed to work with the National Youth Justice Training through the UU College of Social Justice.

Coordinated, recruited, and facilitated classes for a teen pregnancy and HIV prevention curriculum for at-risk youth in the Tulsa area. Taught 2-3 classes per week. Recruiting and networking wasd 70% of the work load. Collaborated with other agency programs, including LGBTQ, transitional living, and prison reentry groups, and with other area agencies, including the Day Center for the Homeless and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma. Also responsible for outreach to and translating materials for the local Hispanic community. Left this position to focus on my seminary studies. I continue to volunteer with the organization as a mentor for the LGBTQ group.

As part of a three-person staff, my official job title was an umbrella for “grants administrator, event coordinator, transcriber, tech support, administrative assistant, hospitality committee, and AV editor.” Duties included grant-writing, transcribing Holocaust survivors’ stories, editing video and audio clips from their interviews, coordinating summer teacher trainings, managing work-study students, light IT work, database management, and more. Accomplishments: Designed & led 6-hour workshops in PowerPoint and Prezi for the 2011 and 2013 Southern Institute Teacher Fellowship Programs; Updated & maintained database of donors and foundations in Microsoft Access; Tracked, scheduled, & sent out grant proposals to over 200 private foundations; Streamlined filing and organization system, including financial and donor records; Implemented a paperless system, including e-fax, PDF records, and cloud-based database and record storage.

With my co-facilitator, helped to rebuild the church’s youth program from scratch after Hurricane Katrina. Served a core group of 10 to 15 youth aged 13 to 19. I also advised at the district level during summer camps and conferences, which served up to 150 youth at a time.
