  • Juniper Networks
    Software Engineer
    Juniper Networks Jan 2012 - Feb 2015
    Sunnyvale, Ca, Us
I was part of the WebApp Secure (fka Mykonos Security Appliance) product team.Mykonos was a deception-based intrusion response system that added monitoring and defense capabilities to any web application with no code changes. Configured "tar traps" were cleverly designed to entice the curious attacker and build a profile of their intent and skill level while gamifying the hacking experience from a system administrator point-of-view. Tradeshow-special hacker autoresponses encouraged the attacker to locate a criminal attorney near their geolocated IP; more practical rules would slow the attacker's traffic, break the site for the attacker, or pepper them with warnings and captchas. While at JNPR, I created and maintained the product's on-box Web UI (Django) and REST API (Python), and contributed code to the product's core configuration management system (Jython), as well as the general security and utility featuresets of the product (Java), documentation, and release notes. In addition to my role as a Software Engineer, I served as the Codemaster for WebApp Secure. In this role, I worked with the Legal department to ensure compliance with third-party / open-source licensing requirements throughout the codebase.Staffed a bunch of tradeshow booths; gave a lot of product demos. Got on planes in marginal situations.

As the Web Developer, I was responsible for the technical aspects of the college's primary website and other discrete web applications. Major projects included selection and implementation of a new Web Content Management System, and development of custom web applications for IT, HR, Admissions, and various academic and administrative departments. In addition to the main "WWW" site, which was (initially) ColdFusion-based (until we rolled out the school's first web CMS), I built nearly two dozen business logic web applications, including the faculty/staff/student directory, a chemical inventory system, and an audited online voting system for faculty committee elections. In this role, I was also responsible for maintaining web server architecture, and was proud to contribute to multiple open source projects, including Django and Plone.I also was part of a rotating group of on-call technicians, providing emergency response for all key IT systems after hours.

In this role, I was directly responsible for approximately 30 discrete websites, ranging from one-page "brochure sites" to database-driven PHP-based web applications.

    Nazareth College Aug 2004 - May 2008
    Rochester, Ny, Us
Trained student workers in the IT / User Support department, and created reference materials for use after training was complete (e.g. a large heads-up poster right in front of the helpdesk operator).I also provided Level-1 support to students, faculty, staff, and alumni on a walk-in and over-the-phone basis; escalated support tickets to technicians as needed, and helped to maintain computer lab and smartroom equipment, including basic printer repair and teaching faculty how to use instructional technology devices and software. When you start out as a Labbie, they make you bring paper to all of the far-away computer labs. I streamlined the process and brought a backpack and a razor scooter to the office that we kept in the closet behind the student supervisor's desk. :-)
