About Steven Pert
“How can we do this better?” If you could summarise my job it would simply be answering this question, which after 11 years working in the mining and manufacturing sector, is not an easy problem to solve.Ever since I was a kid, I have been constantly building and tinkering with things to make them stronger, faster, and more precise. I applied on this passion and completed my Bachelor of Engineering (1st Class Honours) at University of NSW and started my career in the materials processing/metal sector. I worked at Rio Tinto – Pacific Aluminium for over 6 years in various production and engineering roles with one of the highlights working at New Zealand Aluminium smelter, which makes some of the highest quality aluminium in the world (99.98%). In these roles, I learnt about Lean Six Sigma and how it can be a powerful tool and driver for change in any business, whether its production or safety. The best application of this was at the same smelter in New Zealand where I delivered a priority improvement project, working closely with plant floor operators and technical staff to modify the way the furnaces consume additional power, resulting in a new plant production record, valued at NZD $4M p.a. I enjoy working in teams, and my ability to collaborate with a wide range of working styles and skill sets have enabled me to stand out in my previous role in a start-up company manufacturing graphene coatings and smart materials. There were many creative thinkers at this company, so my structured thinking and background in Lean Six Sigma was a valuable addition to the team and I was proud of my achievements in leading project teams in prototype development utilising graphene based smart materials.I have continued to broaden my experiences and apply Lean Six Sigma principles, working at a Rio Tinto iron mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This diverse role had access across all parts of the business from mine operations, fixed plant operation, project planning and business risk. To further develop my business acumen, I am currently undertaking MBA studies at Macquarie University, which I am due to complete in Dec 2022.There are lots of different answers to the question “how can we do this better?” and I enjoy tackling this problem every day in my current project engineering role at Fortescue Future Industries (FFI). The mission of FFI is to decarbonise its mining and metal operations as well as generate sustainable, green energy and hydrogen for future generations.
Listed skills include Process Engineering, Metallurgy, Materials, Aluminum, and 13 others.
