Lead data science projects for development of new features and machine learning use cases.Projects/research highlights:• Invented a novel food entity extractor (food NER) model using a combination of Bi-LSTM/transformer-based Part-Of-Speech (POS) Tagger and OpenAI’s GPT3.5 with positive & negative prompting. The first food NER to retain high performance in non-recipe/menu data.• Developed a pipeline to automatically allocate F&B trends into one of 6 trend maturity classes based on social media engagement and existing retail products, using a combination of rule-based algorithms and Bayesian Optimization.• Built an F&B product concept generator based on OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Led AI-driven new product development and process optimization projects jointly with scientists and engineers in multiple business linesProjects/research highlights:• Built prediction models for chemical concentration in manufacturing tanks based on inward flows using mass balance formula, XGBoost and Bayesian-optimized moving averages to increase production efficiency.• Implemented BanditBO: Gaussian Process (GP) Bayesian Optimization algorithm for mixed categorical and continuous input space, allowing wider application in chemical research.• Developed a surface tension regression model for small molecules using feature engineering via molecular fragments and parachor concept.

In charge of the development and synthesis of novel polymeric additives, mainly dispersants, defoamers and adhesion promoters. Managed innovation projects and cross-business-line collaboration.Highlights:• Developed a class of polymeric dispersants for organic pigments showing the first-seen evidence of true universality in both water-based and non-polar formulation.• Proposed, pitched and managed a technological project to enable the design of a new class of surface-active polymers for additives and specialty binders. Successfully secured funding to bring the project to full scale.

In charge of literature research and synthesis of alkoxylate-based surfactants for application in detergents and carboxylate-based surfactants for oil recovery as well as the analytics such as NMR, HPLC-MS, GC and titrations (acid, saponification, epoxide, hydroxyl values).Achievements:• Established an efficient synthetic route for carboxylate-based surfactants and characterized the main impurities, enabling future optimization.• Discovered the false reading in epoxide and acid value caused by side reactions during titrations.

In charge of the development of novel UV absorbers for polymers including molecular design, synthesis, analytics (NMR, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis) and performance test. Acted as project representative for discussions with global polymer additive experts.Achievements:• Proposed and successfully carried out derivatization of the first generation trial molecules, drastically improving thermal properties and compatibility, leading to patent application.• Discovered a unique bipolar structure of trial UV absorbers through NMR investigation.• Exposed potential cause of low thermal stability and suggested a simple functionalization to solve.• Invited to present in a group meeting attended by scientists of Clariant Frankfurt and research heads of Clariant Japan and China. Received positive feedback and high recommendations to be involved in other projects.

In charge of the product development of 4 new water-based coatings. Supervised 2 lab operators and performed routine tasks such as raw material testing, quality control and paint formulation. Represented Nipsea in technical seminars and trainings by industrial experts.Achievements:• Finished 3 product prototypes with promising qualities.• Spearheaded and spoke in regular coating chemistry training sessions, covering topics on raw materials (binders, fillers, pigments and additives) and new technologies.• Led and accomplished reconstruction of hundreds of product’s technical data sheets to improve consistency and data reliability. Provided English translations for older data sheets.
