As a Graduate Assistant in the Education Department, I am responsible for various tasks with the goal of helping students be more informed about the department, meetings, and the 5th year graduate program. I have worked along side professors and staff in the Education Department to create, plan, and advertise meetings across campus in order to increase our outreach and increase the number of applicants to the graduate program.A large part of my position involves documenting, through video and pictures, the experiences of undergraduate students in our internship programs. This will also include conducting interviews with teachers and principals from schools around the Durham area who take part in the School-University Collaborative. Our final vision is to create a video that will play in our lobby for undergraduates to learn more about the program. Besides my primary responsibilities, I work closely with two other graduate assistants who are responsible for organizing the internship programs we have on campus. I am responsible for familiarizing myself with these programs in order to help the other graduate assistants in any way that I can.Towards the end of the year, I will be increasing our efforts regarding the follow-up surveys with our interns in order to improve upon the internship process overall.

I have been working at Hologic for the past three summers now (June to August) in the cytology laboratory. I worked closely with scientists, engineers, and other cytology lab technicians to work on creating an inventory of slides to be used for customer training. This required being trained in using all the equipment in the laboratory and in the slide making process. Besides slide making, I was also put in charge of Imaging VISE slides for various experiments. For the summer of 2008, I was assigned to work under Howie Kaufman, who is an engineer, as we explored ways of improving our slide making process. We experimented in the laboratory to improve the cell spot on our slides. Our final goal was to find a new material that would distribute cells in a uniformed coverage, while keeping a few clumps of cells. We created our own custom made filters in house and used them with our experiments to compare and contrast to our manufactured filters.
