I am a dedicated and enthusiastic scientist with a passion for translational medicine and neglected disease. My main professional motivation is help deliver novel modalities to ameliorate disease in an equitable and sustainable manner - with a strong belief that science can, and should make tangible improvements to people’s lives and livelihoods. After completing BSc in Immunology at the university of Glasgow, I pursued a PhD in immunology and translational medical research with Dr Clive McKimmie and Professor Gerry Graham. My PhD focussed on the impact of mosquito bites on the inflammation of the skin and how this affected virus transmission. With a more complete understanding of the cutaneous immune response to both viruses and mosquito bites, our team was then able to suggest immune modulation of the skin immune response as a potential novel treatment for viruses such as Dengue and chikungunya. After completion of my PhD, I was motivated to embark on a new challenge, investigating novel vaccine strategies for tick borne viruses, whilst helping the University of Glasgow develop a high containment animal facility to investigate key aspects of the mammalian immune response to viruses including SFTSV and SARS-CoV2. My current position at an international contract research organisation has allowed me to transfer and apply my academic skills in a commercial environment. At Sartorius I provide scientific expertise to the custom GMP team and help perform qualifications and validations for unique client projects.

Scientist/Study ManagerSartorius Stedim Biotech Jul 2021 - Jun 2024Glasgow, Scotland, United KingdomIn my role as a Scientist and study manager for this global CRO, I performed custom GxP qualifications and validations for a range of assays (qPCR, ELISA, Cell based). In addition, i performed custom protocol design and execution of lab work for clients with special requests. This engendered me with excellent client communication skills, a deep understanding of the commercial requirements of pharmaceutical companies and CRO's and, an excellent knowledge of quality and regulatory processes. -
Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of Glasgow, College Of Medical, Veterinary And Life Sciences Oct 2018 - Jul 2021Glasgow, United KingdomMy role at the University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) over 3 excellent and productive years was to research the immuno-pathogenesis of tick borne viruses including severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus - to drive the investigation of novel vaccine and therapeutic strategies. These included virus like particle (VLP) and reverse genetic live attenuated vaccine designs and anti-IL6 therapies. As part of this extensive project, I was instrumental in designing and establishing CL3 facilities and CL3 animal models to help achieve our goal. In addition to my research roles, I supporter postdoc development as a postdoctoral representative, and lead the CVR flow cytometry facility, maintaining the facilities and helping other researchers design and perform flow cytometry and FACS. This role allowed me to further develop my project management, experimental design and data analysis skills along with improving key transferable skills including presentation skills, leadership/mentor skills, and workplace collegiality. -

Phd StudentUniversity Of Leeds Oct 2014 - Dec 2018Leeds, United KingdomProtection Against Arbovirus Infection by Topical Innate Immune AgonistsThe burden of emerging and re-emerging arthropod borne viruses (arboviruses) such as chikungunya virus, dengue virus and bluetongue virus on human and animal health is profound. Yet there are no treatments or effective vaccines currently available for most of these infectionsThis project took advantage of a unique in vivo model of arbovirus infection, bringing together all relevant aspects of natural infection - including the bites of aedes aegypti mosquitoes and insect cell passaged virus - in one model system. We used this model to investigate key aspects of the innate immune response to these viruses at cutaneous bite sites; and suggest that therapeutic intervention at this site represents a plausible new strategy for targeting arbovirus infection.Find out more at -www.virus-host-interactions.org -
