Today, Budapest has a lively tech startup scene that meets regularly at several different networking events. In the late '90s, First Tuesday Budapest was the first.We sold long-term sponsorships to KPMG, Deloitte and MATAV-Ventures, and grew the membership to 1,500+. At our peak, we held First Tuesday events in Budapest with 400+ attendees.Following the dotcom crash of 2001, I partnered with with Central European University Business School to continue the event under the auspices of the school.

iSYS Hungary was the first commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Hungary. We assembled a creative dream team, studied the emerging US business models and spun off local innovations:• The Top100 ranked Hungary's most popular local language websites;• Netstart offered Hungarian-language users a free online intro to the Internet.• With Gallup Hungary, we published the first demographic survey of the Hungarian Internet;• Provided IP to one of Europe's first Internet meetups, the Metaforum series.In 2000, we sold the Hungarian Link Exchange, a local online ad network, to Trader.com.

In 1990, Hungary had just one English-language newspaper, published by the government. The capital city, Budapest, was flooding with Westerners looking to make business or 'help' in some way. It was the Wild, Wild East.Nobody had a cell phone. Google didn't exist.I was a struggling a freelance journalist. With just a handful of published stories under my belt I decided to launch a weekly, English-language paper - with a band of like-minded friends.The Budapest Week pioneered the nascent print advertising market in Hungary. We trained a generation of journalists. The Budapest Week cultivated a tribe of avid readers, fans and friends. We informed and entertained them. We threw parties, got them drunk, and served them barbequed chicken.
