My career started with a temporary position at my hometown Wal-Mart that became permanent. The foundation of my management style was developed over my many years with that organization. They taught me the importance of servant leadership. I believe an effective leader develops or interprets an organization’s vision and inspires the team to implement that vision within their day to day culture. A solid leader provides the tools that allow his team to thrive. They create synergy within the organization that encourages input from the team that fuels continuous improvement. My time with CarMax reinforced this. When conducting 5S within the shop, it was the person who worked in the station that knew best how to sort the tools. Every associate has something to contribute. And when success is realized, Wal-Mart taught me the importance of “winning is fun” or knowing when and how to celebrate with the team and appreciate their efforts.
