Steven Schecter began to make films with the camera his uncle gave him for his 13th birthday, and went on to apprentice at Guggenheim Productions in Washington, DC during his last two years of high school. The summer after his freshman year at Harvard, Steve was hired by the Smithsonian's National Human Studies Film Center to research human potential through film. Over the next seven years, he shot 150 hours of film of indigenous peoples in Brazil, Micronesia, India, and Nepal. He finished his Harvard degree in social anthropology, magna cum laude, in 1980. Steve started his own production company soon after, and his work has ranged from The Inner Runner, a documentary of a 24-hour running race; to a variety of programs about social and political change in the Soviet Union and Russia; to Intimate Truths of the Canela Tribe, re-visiting Brazil twenty years later, shown over thirty times on Discovery and National Geographic. In Moscow in 1990 at the last Party Congress, he made: The Party's Over. It was in the PBS series, The 90s, and is now re-used by other filmmakers 30 years later in a film about fake news. He was director of photography on Windhorse, a drama about contemporary Tibet, one of the first feature films ever to be shot digitally. He was also director of photography on With God on Our Side, the PBS history of the religious right. His films also include: Passion & Discipline - Don Quixote’s Lessons for Leadership for Stanford, and Headstrong -Inside the Hidden World of Dyslexia and ADHD, both broadcast on PBS.
