As an intern in the Core Restraints Engineering group I gained experience in the development of seatbelts, the occupant classification system, steering wheels, and the driver airbag. Highlights of my internship include the following:• Developed and validated an improved testing method for fastener joint testing to aid a task force team in root cause analysis• Supported occupant classification system (OCS) child seat testing and the revision of seatbelt test methods with the seatbelt and OCS core engineering teams• Added to the seatbelt, steering wheel, and driver airbag benchmarking databases to aid in target setting and compiling reference information on forward model programs• Collaborated with three suppliers to update the seatbelt training module with the latest seatbelt technologies

During my time with the Interior Cockpit Systems team at DENSO I contributed to the design and testing of instrument clusters and heads up displays. Some of my accomplishments are listed below:• Supported the design and testing of instrument clusters for nine vehicle programs through part mock-ups, drawing releases, lighting measurements, calibrations, and supporting various packaging tests• Designed eleven instrument cluster shock and vibration test fixtures in CATIA and validated fixture performance in ANSYS• Coordinated several instrument cluster PCB packaging tests by scheduling the tests, determining test conditions, preparing parts, analyzing test results, and proposing design changes to support production verification milestones• Assigned product development tasks and training material to a new employee and supervised the co-op’s integration into the team while performing my daily engineering responsibilities

This internship exposed me to the complexity involved in setting part tolerances in order to mass produce systems that properly fit together. I enjoyed learning GD&T and visiting Ford and supplier manufacturing plants to measure parts and resolve issues. Some aspects of my internship are noted below:• Delivered door trim part attachment design strategies and drawings with proper GD&T to meet dimensional performance and fit and finish section design requirements on multiple programs• Measured and assessed fit and finish conditions on prototype parts and vehicles and assisted design and release (D&R) engineers and suppliers with resolving issues due to design or manufacturing flaws• Contributed to the Product Development Unibody Appearance Excellence Team’s delivery of vehicle level craftsmanship through global meetings with D&R engineers, studio designers, and craftsmanship engineers

Several of my tasks with the Vehicle Modeling Team are listed below:• Developed coding and naming conventions with a team to expedite the process of delivering virtual representations of vehicle parts and configurations in Teamcenter • Supported a vehicle program by altering the Engineering Bill of Materials for different vehicle design instances• Computed various locations and positions of vehicle parts and positioned them in CATIA to allow engineers and customers to see virtual representations of vehicle configurations

In my first internship at Ford I was provided insight into the challenges that come with standardizing processes across a large company. I was fortunate learn engineering skills from veteran engineers within the company while performing the items below:• Collaborated on cross functional pilot project teams with software and core design engineers from the ABS, front brakes, and throttle body teams to integrate systems engineering information from multiple platforms into one Ford software tool• Researched systems’ functions, requirements, and interfaces and proposed changes to core engineering documents such as DFMEAs and DVP&Rs to help deliver Ford’s ideal versions of systems engineering documents• Attended a five day Systems Engineering Excellence through Design conference and participated in Failure Mode Avoidance training to better assist my teams in systems engineering

My time at nanoMAG provided me with an opportunity to experience research and development and small batch manufacturing in a small business environment. Some of my experiences with the company are listed below:• Piloted company research projects for magnesium alloy applications by determining thermo-mechanical processes and evaluating changes in samples’ material and mechanical properties due to processing • Conducted corrosion tests on bio-absorbable alloy samples and analyzed the test results while maintaining the test equipment• Contributed to the process of obtaining ISO certification by standardizing methods and drafting SOP’s in the materials laboratory • Oversaw all materials lab operations and assisted in the manufacturing of plates for knee brace applications
