  • Cartagenia
    Founder
    Cartagenia Oct 2008 - May 2015
    Leuven, Be
Cartagenia helped genetics labs and clinics interpret, report, and share genomic variants in a clinical diagnostic setting across cancer genomics, inherited disease, and prenatal diagnosis. Based on the machine learning and biomedical text embedding genotype-phenotype correlation methods I developed during my PhD, Cartagenia's SaaS platform allowed labs to build efficient variant assessment and reporting workfows and effectively communicate with their referring physicians. As a scientific founder, I built on my clinical diagnostic knowledge, scientific insights, a deep understanding of routine diagnostic lab workflows, and solution selling skills to drive revenue growth in European markets and build out a mature software and clinical decision support platform for genomic testing. Our family relocation from Europe to the US East Coast was both a personal adventure as well as a driver for revenue in the US to equal that in Europe within the year. I built out key partnerships with hospitals, labs, academia and private lab groups to establish our US footprint – with key collaborations with institutions like the NIH, Invitae, Jax, Mount Sinai, Genoptix, Geisinger, Sanford, and more. Cartagenia partnered with Agilent Technologies and was later acquired and successfully integrated into the Diagnostics and Genomics Group.
  • Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
    Phd Researcher
    Katholieke Universiteit Leuven 2004 - Nov 2009
    Leuven, Be
As a PhD student and later as a postdoctoral scientist, I developed biomedical text machine learning tools for genotype-phenotype correlation and routine clinical interpretation of genetic variation in inherited disease and cancer context. Beyond the theory and research, I created actionable tools to support diagnosis of rare genetic disease, which lead to international research collaborations, and has culminated in a spinoff company now servicing major hospitals and genetic labs worldwide with genetic diagnostic data management platform based on a cloud computing SaaS model, across clinical research, routine oncology dx, congenital disease, and prenatal diagnosis.
  • Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
    Postdoctoral Researcher
    Katholieke Universiteit Leuven 2008 - 2009
    Leuven, Be
As a postdoctoral researcher at Leuven University, I transferred research results at the Bioinformatics team to concrete clinical applications in routine diagnostics at the University hospital. Based on the results of my PhD research and together with my partner in crime, we built a business plan, engaged first customers, secured seed funding, and built an initial team to foster the incorporation of Cartagenia as a spin-off.
  • Sanger Institute & Ebi

    Sanger Institute & Ebi 2006 - 2006
    Heidelberg, De
As a visiting researcher I worked together with the SANGER Web Team (the ENSEMBL crew) and the Cytogenetics group of Nigel Carter to implement biomedical literature data mining tools for candidate gene prioritization based on human phenotype ontologies. This work lead to the extension of DECIPHER (https://decipher.sanger.ac.uk/) with tools to guide clinical interpretation of copy number variants in patients with rare genetic disorders.
