After earning my MBA from Florida Southern College and my CPA license, I started a career in public accounting. Later, I moved to the tax department of a large timeshare company. I was immersed in the financial and political workings of the large company and managed a team that handled numerous tax returns, payments, and issues. Meanwhile, I also taught accounting students. I discovered I could help students grasp difficult concepts and apply them, and my real-world experiences were useful in the accounting and tax courses. I also began my accounting firm. I was soon contracted as the CFO for a client's medical supply company. As an "outsider," the owner valued my feedback; my honest advice was based on data, not a concern for pleasing him. As a result, I guided the finance team to turn around a collections issue, thereby solving a cash flow problem. We also navigated the company's growth, almost doubling income in 5 years. Since 2006, I've served as an officer and director of various publicly traded companies. In several, I was hired to clean up issues left by the previous leadership, including settling outstanding debts, bringing SEC and IRS filings up-to-date, and fundraising to gain private equity. Most recently, I guided a company through the process of applying for and receiving a listing in NASDAQ.
