At Earth Blox I was Operations and Business Insights Specialist, a nature and climate analytics company supporting companies with sustainability reporting. With previous startup experience, I helped with strategy, sales, marketing, and tech to grow the company. I engaged customers, created dashboards, wrote code, managed our cloud infrastructure, and would regularly do growth experiments. I also managed our Google relationship as a Google Cloud Partner, including having the product launched on Google marketplace 🚀

Working between research projects and knowledge transfer. In my research capacity my role is to contribute to and lead research projects in the space sector, working with space companies and space agencies. In my knowledge transfer role I am responsible for promoting the use of space technologies across various industries including, but not limited to, offshore energy, future cities, environmental and transport. In my current position I am responsible for the mathematical modelling and control system design of engineering systems across a variety of industries. This includes, but is not limited to, the aerospace, marine and nuclear industry sectors. Recently, I have also gained experience in electrical systems modelling and applied this to the design of naval ships.Given my background and continued interest in the space industry, I am also in charge of the Scottish space industry business campaign. In this capacity I regularly attend local conferences and meet with local space companies.

My PhD considered novel transfer methods for spacecraft. I developed a novel hybrid propulsion transfer and optimisation methodology providing me with experience in the modelling and optimisation of both high and low-thrust propulsion transfers; both analytically and numerically. I applied the hybrid transfer to several relevant transfers, primarily LEO/GTO - GEO transfers, for medium to large satellite platforms (1000 – 10,000 kg) with current and near-term propulsion systems. As the project was simulation based, I developed new skills in software coding; specifically for trajectory design but applicable to general maths based problems. In addition, I have experience managing all aspects of a project through experience and a formal professional project management qualification I have gained (CAPM).

In this position I am the technical lead for two undergraduate projects which have materialised out of the work done for my PhD. I am responsible for providing direction on the projects and ensuring the students are on track to deliver the scheduled workload within the given time frame.

Alongside my PhD I am involved in tutoring and lecturing undergraduate students. This has focussed on design engineering with the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and software coding for engineering with the use of Matlab software. Additionally, I currently lecture undergraduate students on the aerodynamics of aircraft; particularly focussing on the design and performance aspects of different aircraft.

In this position I was responsible for the operation of the resort's ski lifts. I had to ensure the chairlift was operating efficiently and be quick to diagnose any problems that may prevent the safe operation of the chairlift. This required knowledge of large scale electric motors and control systems used for analysis of the chairlift. I was part of an international team of forty members; this tested my teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

During this placement I gained exposure to Lean principles and implemented a total planned maintenance schedule to capture maintenance costs and improve machine reliability; ultimately improving the performance of the service centre. I worked directly with management and workshop personnel in this role, allowing further development of my teamwork and communication skills while also gaining experience of working to strict project deadlines.

In this position I was part of a team responsible for the analysis of oil and gas pipelines both on and off-shore. I also helped write technical reports for the clients detailing the analysis with any recommendations. Through this I familiarised myself with common procedures in the industry and developed a solid understanding of pipeline analysis.

In this position I investigated the effect of laser surface treatment on titanium alloys with specific application for the aerospace industry. I gained experience in metallurgy; including sample preparation, hardness testing and microscopic analysis.
