Steven provides unique full-stack engineering for a variety of Norwegian customers on a consulting basis. Projects in Norway include proposals for optimizing long-running simulations, tuning SQL databases providing improvements of 3x on some queries, suggesting better SQL query structuring. With architectural changes he has found order-of-magnitude speed-ups in the scientific computing domain. He has also been involved in measuring and improving media content delivery systems. As a senior member of a department which grew from 9 to 43 people during that period, provided architectural and coding leadership for the Solaris TCP/IP protocol stack. Developed the first prototype of “FireEngine”, re-architecting the AT&T STREAMS-based TCP/IP for better multi-processor efficiency. Lead web performance efforts, including participating in SPEC.org’s development of SPECweb96 and SPECweb99 benchmarks. Developed the “Packet Shell” to facilitate testing and debugging TCP/IP stacks. Rescued the troubled “in-kernel telnet” project, by making key architectural fixes and rigorous testing methods. Responsibilities included key fixes for system crashes and performance, as well as technical leadership to the growing team.

Guided architecture and implementation of the company’s first Internet gateway. Designed and implemented key performance improvements for the SVR4 TCP/IP stack.

Stabilized and delivered AMD 29K UNIX port, by re-writing context switching code. Developed kernel debug- ger for UniPlus operating system. Merged Motorola 68K and 88K SVR4 code bases. Designed, implemented, and tested fixes to STREAMS-based co-processor I/O board for A/UX. Guided POSIX certification work, includ- ing implementing key fixes. Facilitated key discussions between engineers and Fujitsu management, as Fujitsu negotiated acquiring UniSoft Corp.
